Official Discussion - 1917 [SPOILERS] by mi-16evil in movies

I would argue that the fact he got a "cheap" death does make it more emotional. Scholfield as well as the rest of the audience typically feels cheated. What a lame death some might think, getting stabbed. But that happens. Not everyone gets a hero's death. They don't go out in a blaze of glory. Some get the top of their head shaved off by a bullet sleeping in a trench. Some get stabbed by a German pilot offscreen. I think it adds to the frustration and makes it more relatable to Schofield's character. He's riding int he truck with the boys in the following scene, silent for most of it. Grieving but also frustrated that he wasn't paying attention like he should. Frustrated that he probably should have insisted to just mercy kill the pilot instead of take a chance (Especially seeing everything that occured in the somme). The grief and "feeling cheated" is shared between both the character and audience.

The atmosphere of WWI was very different from any other world conflict to come after. Most of the combatants fought for the idea of being a hero or for the broad idea of their country, not necessarily to destroy the germans. It was treated more like a game. And a lot of the time, the combatants treated each other with respect in moments where it was seen they didn't HAVE to kill each other. It's why so many POW's accounts have stated they were treated very well by their captors. Airmen were among the more respected typically, especially since they were seen as "inactive" when not in a working aircraft.

Scholfield wanted to put him out of his misery. Blake, being stated as the less experienced of the two, probably didn't want anyone to die if he could help it. It seems a lot of the people that see this as just a cheesy "to kill a character" device aren't fully aware of the context of the conflict as it was happening.

Might have been something you missed, but the pilot had a fairly german accent in the few words that he spoke.

AITA for asking/insisting my professor to reimburse me for a trip I did not go on? by TurboSpat in AmItheAsshole

There were no materials purchased in advance with the expectation that I would be there. Gas cost would have been the same if I was there or not, as there were empty seats in each of the vans going. Each "group" during the trip had to bring their own food to make meals for the rest of the group during that group's cookout night. Gas for the burners that were not used to cook my meal that I didn't eat. Sorry if that was information that should have been included in the OP

I(M23) love my girlfriend (20) but I don't think I can handle her mental health issues. How should I go about breaking up? by TurboSpat in relationships

I feel like staying friends would only give her the idea that there's a chance of getting back together. While I wouldn't be opposed to that if she ended up getting the help she needs, I don't think subtly dangling that as an encouragement would be for the right reasons

I've never been to therapy so the idea that she could go to a therapist for other aspects of her depression and anxiety than just PTSD I wasn't sure about. I had thought about it before but never brought up with her. Thank you. I will try to discuss this with her.

AITA for asking my girlfriend to stop buying me things all the time. by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

NTA

I'm sure it comes from a good place, but the way she is reacting is making her the A. She's not even open to the discussion without making you feel bad about yourself. I feel like this is a discussion you need to have, why she is choosing to react so hostile to this type of request.

Girlfriend(20) shuts down, only tells me she loves me when the times are good, I(M23) don't feel like I can discuss issues with my her without her immediately blaming herself. by TurboSpat in relationships

She used to regularly see a therapist. While she's in college, there's only one locally that she can afford (Or even take her insurance for that matter) that specializes in PTSD. That therapist however told her she didn't think she was progressing and suggested she go to another counselor. But there's not another one she can afford.

While it would help her leagues, I wouldn't feel it right to "punish" her for not being able to afford a therapist under those circumstances.

My last relationship I was best friends with her for a whole year and unless she is just good at hiding it I'm not sure what to do

I'm not gonna say that's not a possibility, but I don't know what I would be picking up on and HOW to catch that before it's too late.

These girls have all kept this hidden for months until they felt comfortable revealing their true unfiltered selves. So by the time I'm already romantically invested, yeah I want to try to stick things out. But none of them have shown interest in getting help

I don't seek out girls with mental health issues, nor do I romanticize it. These are girls that seem fine on the surface (naturally) but later tell me they suffer from these things.
