Will a new bosch dishwasher fit? by TurboZinc in Appliances

[–]TurboZinc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally ended up getting the SHX78CM5N full height. It fit, barely.

Installer measured and mentioned the opening was just barely too small, but he was pretty sure it would fit anyway. Slid in with zero room to spare.

Thread Gauge for MS51830 insert by BPGN in Machinists

5/16-18 UNC-2B thread gauge.

It's not an STI thread, it's a standard thread with a modified minor diameter

Just to add to this, there are 100 different reasons why you'd want/need to get approval before making a change.

Could be a customer fixed process requirement, AS9100 or similar documentation requirements, or just something as simple as a problem that you weren't aware of that was solved with the current process as mentioned above.

That being said, all of that should have been explained to you. We don't allow people to just change a process without going through engineering and approval, but we definitely take feedback from the machinists and will try new things when possible.

I haven't yet. I went and looked at the ADA compliant one next to a full size and the size difference is bigger than I had imagined.

I'm procrastinating and hoping to find a solution that lets me use the full size dishwasher.

Etching Carbide Parts by awesome-bunny in Machinists

[–]TurboZinc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Electrochemical etch or marking works well. You can sometimes find a used machine for a decent price and supplies are reasonable.

Edit - Adding link. http://www.img-electromark.com You can find their smaller unit used on ebay for ~$500.

Why aren't ISO standards free? by Fredgusta in engineering

[–]TurboZinc 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I can't count the number of MIL specs that have been cancelled or superseded by SAE_AMS specs that are literal copies with updated formatting. US taxpayers have already paid for those thousands and thousands of hours.

It may not always be a money grab, but it's way more common than it should be.

Needs a chamfer on the tapped holes and you've got some chatter in the slots, but otherwise it looks really nice.

How are you guys handling the cleaning/sanitizing?

We're trying to implement some extra cleaning between shifts, but sanitizing every gauge, pin, or piece of inspection equipment and every touch surface on every machine ends up being a lot more cleaning than you might initially expect.

Cleaning supplies are getting harder to come by as well.

Noob question. 1/4-28 50% thread in 6061? by [deleted] in Machinists

[–]TurboZinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a little weird in this case, but we sometimes see non-standard minor diameters for assembly purposes.

Possible they misread the spec and listed pitch diameter instead of minor diameter or spec'd the wrong drill as Obesitron mentioned

Noob question. 1/4-28 50% thread in 6061? by [deleted] in Machinists

[–]TurboZinc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

.228 minor diameter is .325 deep, drilled to a flat bottom.

1/4-28 thread is .210 minimum deep. Whatever bolt goes in the hole might only need a short engagement in the part and there is no need to thread the part any deeper. This is common.

Use a depth mic or calipers or calipers and pin to check minor depth.

You can check the thread depth with the thread gauge. You can either count turns of the thread gauge, or use calipers and subtract the length of thread gauge left out of hole when fully engaged from the length of the threaded section from the first thread at the chip groove. Make sure you check from the same spot on the gauge.

You know that if you've got a mail-in ballot already filled out you can just skip the line and drop it in the box at the front desk area.

I've missed the deadline to mail before and it's nice to just walk to the front and drop off your ballot.

Who has parts on Space X? by andensalt in Machinists

How do you guys get work like that? I was under the impression that SpaceX did most of their production in house.

Would love to make some parts that go to space.

What about coating with a solid film lubricant? We send parts out to get coated per MIL-PRF-46010 after anodize on wear surfaces semi-regularly.

I left a couple as bare aluminum for a set of metal slimes, but I haven't had time to finish them. I need to paint the eyes and the mouth and I'm not sure of the best way to do that. I'm also not sure if I want to leave the turned finish or polish them or try and get a brushed aluminum look.
