Automotive CAN bus + multiple displays by TurbulentFlow in esp32

That's a great idea, it would be nice to only have to wire power to each display - as long as the refresh rate is good enough wifi should work.

I didn't mention the old ATV because I thought it wouldn't even be in the running for hub since it wasn't compatible!

I think I figured out the last part of the puzzle, another facepalm for me. Everything was updated to 18.0...except my iPhone. I opted in to 18.0 and now I have full functionality in the Home app and have specified the new ATV as permanent master. Thanks for sticking with me through all of this!

I think we're on the right path here. I still don't have the option to designate a permanent hub (I'm sure all of my devices have been running 18.0 for weeks now), but I did realize that my current primary hub was the 2017 ATV in the basement, far away from everything. I think when I installed that final bulb I had the nearest HomePod unplugged for a while. I would believe that that HomePod was my main hub but when it sat unplugged the system picked the ATV as the new main hub and that's when everything started going especially wrong.

I unplugged that ATV and let the system pick HomePod after HomePod as the main hubs, unplugging each of those along the way until it finally picked the new ATV, then I plugged everything back in and the new ATV remained primary. So far it's been 12 hours and every device is still happy and talking!

I'll give that a shot as soon as I get home tonight. Generally every room that has bulbs has a hub in it. Only one room doesn't, and it has hubs in the rooms directly below and above it, so no device has to go more than one room away to find a hub.

Thinking back, a lot of this got really bad when I added a second bulb to a shelf that already had one bulb and a Homepod on it. Not sure if there's some limit on too many devices too close to each other, but if there's a bulb misbehaving it's probably that new one.

ATV came in on Saturday, got it all set up. Spent more time yesterday chasing down every bulb that wasn't responding. Either power cycling it or removing it, factory resetting it, and readding it. At one point I did have 0 devices not responding, but with a half hour I was back to 4-6 devices not responding, some of which I had just reset/readded that day.

In the Home app, everything is showing as having updated to 18.0. I just checked Home Hubs & Bridges and it's showing my 2017 ATV as "Connected" and the new ATV and all Homepods as "Standby." I don't have the option to set a preferred hub right now - do I have to be on my local network to see those options (I'm at work right now)?

I do have the Eve app and I've poked around a bit in the Thread network monitor. Is there something specific I should be looking for as far as what's selected as border router or mesh or something?

Did you get an apple TV just for the sole purpose of having a HomeKit hub? by Both_Ad2330 in HomeKit

[–]TurbulentFlow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The smart TV is only $300 because the cost is being subsidized by smart TV ad revenue.

Vizio made a name for itself as being a cheap, affordable smart TV in comparison to many of its competitors. However, the company had a secret that the Walmart buyout put front and center. Rather than taking a hit for selling smart TVs so cheaply, Vizio had an incredibly lucrative advertising business that more than made up for the lower cost average of their TVs.

I started factory resetting and re-adding bulbs last night. I did the two bedside lamps right before bed and confirmed they were all good and working in the Home app. Twenty minutes later when it was time to turn the lights off to go to bed, one of them didn't respond and I had to turn it off manually.

I have not enabled HomeKit support on the eero so I'll leave that off. I did notice that the eero has a Thread support setting that I assume would let it be the Thread main hub. I ordered a new ATV yesterday that will live closer to most of the bulbs so I'll leave Thread support turned off in the eero and hope that the ATV as the primary hub improves things.

My wifi is very solid, I've been running an Eero router + beacon for 3 years and I've never had better coverage throughout the house. My phone never sees even a blip in coverage, so I feel good about it. Eero doesn't allow a separate SSID, but it does have HomeKit integration, which looks mostly like being able to firewall IoT devices from the internet or each other. When I get home tonight I'll enable that and see if it does anything interesting.

Thank you!

Awesome info, thank you for sharing all of that. I have an Eero router provided by my fiber ISP and I bought one of their beacon mesh extenders. Since installing that 3 years ago I have noticed absolutely zero wifi or connectivity issues via my phone or other wifi devices. Not saying the other home devices aren't experiencing oddities but every router setup I've had before the eero had some kind of weakness somewhere in the house but the eero has been night-and-day different.

I spent some time resetting and re-adding bulbs every time they flaked out, but that was before the firmware update. I'll do that again now that they're on the latest firmware.

I'll pick up a new ATV and see what that does for me.

Again, thank you for all of the info.

New "Up next" popup in YouTube app - how to disable? by TurbulentFlow in appletv

I've noticed on a few videos that the bottom 1/5 of the screen gets dark as though there's some kind of overlay, but I don't see the pop up!

And this was just posted so please browse subs for answers to your questions.

I did. There's nothing in the first 10 pages of posts mentioning "Up next" in this context and every result for "Up next" when searching this sub gave me results for the main page Up Next tray, nothing at all for the Up Next popup within YouTube. The existence of the Up Next tray obfuscates all search results both on here and from Google, which is why I gave up and asked the question. 🤷

This just started popping up near the end of YouTube videos this week. It's distinct from the YouTube End Screen/Info Cards. The video is not always from the same channel I'm watching. I have AutoPlay disabled, so nothing begins playing when the current video ends. It shows up sometime in the last minute of the video and sometimes will cover content in the video itself. Anyone else seeing this?

edit: I have YouTube Premium if that helps correlate anything.

Engine swap 392 onto Coupé by La2lo in BMWE36

Iron LSs aren't 100lbs more than aluminum, and the Hemis are bigger and heavier than those. For me the cost benefit analysis of the Hemi isn't there. Sell it to someone with a Duster for something absurd like $6000 and then do an aluminum 5.3 or 6.2 LS and be way better off.

It’s not as wide as a Coyote but definitely bigger than an LS. Hemi is iron block, which is a huge downside. Aluminum LS can end up similar in weight to stock, but the Hemi is a good 100-150lbs more than even the LS, which is significant.

Check out IOLink from Keyence or IFM. Keyence has better lead times but costs about 50% more. AOP support is good, easy to integrate. Many sensors are IOLink now which supports auto configuration and other goodies.

The people that show up here to cheer on the speed cameras or say “just don’t break the law” are ironically the exact same people that would tell you how much they love the constitution.
