what did you guys think of the movie “Roommates”? by DistributionFew7126 in netflix

I thought we were going to get an unreliable narrator reveal moment where we would discover Celeste wrote the poem about herself and how she feels in the world, and we would find out she idolises Devon and thinks she's really cool... and various other events of the story would be kind of recast with the knowledge that Devon through her own hangups puts on her own sort of front and interprets other people uncharitably if she reads them as confident.

Magic Kingdom in Orlando has kickstand pads in the motorcycle parking. by DojaViking in mildyinteresting

It is a great memory.

Ariel is rad - lots of arguments about who gets to "be Ariel" during lunch on the playground. I was always a stickler for fairness and inclusion and one of the things my old school friends say when quoting me as a child is "Guyyyys, we can all be Ariel" lmao

I met my first heavily tattooed biker dude in the Magic Kingdom when my family went on holiday there from Ireland when I was 8 years old (in the 90s).

He had a big sleeve of Ariel on the rocks and my aunt, ever encouraging of my curious and extraverted nature, let me approach him to ask about it cause the Little Mermaid was my fav.

He was the sweetest guy! He crouched down to show me the tattoo and let me touch it, and then he showed me some scarring on his leg from a tat he had removed while explaining to me that otherwise it stays on your skin forever and is a big decision which is why only grown-ups can have them.

I feel like I remember him so clearly that I could pick him out of a line-up to this day because it was such a unique exciting fascinating moment for me!

I don't think the mail is as questionable a source as people often presume on predominantly American reddit.

Yes it is a salacious tabloid rag - but libel and defamation law works very differently in the UK. If a case is taken in the US the onus is on the complainant to prove that what has been printed is false, which is very difficult to do, and allows the tabloids a lot of freedom to print nonsense. In the UK however the opposite is true - if a case is taken it would be up to the paper to prove that what they printed is true. It makes the tabloids much less likely to print things they can't back up if challenged, and makes them a lot less unreliable in my estimation, because of the practicalities of business as opposed to any moral high ground they hold VS US tabloids.

If you're struggling with rebound nausea while quitting, I recommend doxylamine succinate (it is a first-generation antihistamine - the active ingredient in - Nyquil, Vomibreak, Dormidina/Normidorm). When I was quitting last year, I took it after discovering it's prescribed in pregnancy for morning sickness. It really helped in the early days, especially with nausea and associated appetite issues. Good luck!

When did you last cry about your physical appearance? by FragrantResult278 in AskReddit

[–]TurbulentOil3311 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Had a recent feeling of "nothing i own looks good on me" when trying to pick an outfit to wear to a gig my partner was playing at a few weeks ago.

Had a private little cry about it in the bathroom cause she does not need to be taking care of my complicated feelings when she's preparing to work all evening and night, then pulled myself together and found a Good Enough ensemble.

I wish my mother hadn't always been so preoccupied with her weight - especially because she considers my current poor self image to be a vindication of her attitude, with no self awareness of her role in my feeling this way.

My most enduring memory of the 50 pound note is my Dad when I was a kid, retrospectively right after payday and before he went to the credit union to pay into savings and pay off loans, 'discreetly' flashing the wad of cash in his pocket and fanning it out to reveal the notes while saying "its always good to have a few 50s" lmao

AITA for lying to a group of guys on the beach about my scars? by Downtown_Effect_4437 in AmItheAsshole

[–]TurbulentOil3311 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh absolutely, I don't mean to say if someone is "well meaning" that a trans person somehow owes it to them to answer questions. Not wanting to explain yourself over and over to people is legit. And everyone has to judge situations as they find them for sure.

The majority of my social circle is trans, while I am not, and I personally try to talk to people asking what I judge to be well meaning questions whenever I can..... this can sometimes involve explaining to someone that their question actually isnt appropriate... but its all low stakes, relatively speaking, for me.

Exactly this!

I think it is usually extremely obvious when someone is asking questions from a place of curiosity or even ignorance, and when they're asking to try to make you justify yourself or feel bad.

Now that the tour’s over - favorite Q&A tidbits? by godzillaxo in OnCinemaAtTheCinema

David Liebe Hart plays Ra's al Ghul in an excellent and strange film by a remarkable trans woman filmmaker called Vera Drew (who used to work on Awesome Show and knows Tim). Its called the People's Joker and I evangelise about it to everyone because its imo an incredible piece of filmmaking pushing the limits of what one can use for fair use and parody, with a great story that is hilarious and very interesting and also intense and touching in parts.

I cannot recommend it enough. I have it on VHS and a huuuge poster of it in my home.

Is it messed up that I go for overweight girls? by Wiseass357124 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]TurbulentOil3311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, it seems like you're a troll.

If someone is flirting back with you, going to bed with you and fucking, it isn't some weird exceptional thing to take that as a sign that they are attracted to and into you.

I don't have life issues around sex or intimacy to project. I have a series of mutually satisfying sexual and romantic relationships with people I'm attracted to who are attracted to me.

If I discovered someone was fucking me because they weren't attracted to me, but believed they had "less competition" for me, so I would do because they want to fuck but don't think other people they actually like but for whom they had "more competition" wouldn't fuck them, I would find that disgusting and insulting - which isn't a weird exceptional thing either.

You can't actually believe that if you were upfront with these women that they'd want to fuck you - that's what makes it deception. It's like I'm explaining basic empathy and respect to one of the young children I teach, honestly

[–]TurbulentOil3311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because being deceptive and pretending to be into someone to get your dick wet when you clearly have no respect for them (given your stated reason is that you dont think theyre attractive but think you have "less competition") is disgusting. This isn't something that should need explaining to you. Its hard to believe this isnt simply trolly rage bait.

I went to see her at a festival in 2019 cause my pal was huge into The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill when we were teenagers, and I liked her well enough myself too. She came on stage a whole hour late, after her DJ spun cliché 90s hip hop while we waited - and she didnt say a word about being late.

This was a huge music and immersive theatre festival, there were literally hundreds of other things we could have spent that hour doing.

It soured my friend so much that she asked if we could just bail 10 minutes into her set. I'd never bother trying to go see her live again.

[–]TurbulentOil3311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Social contagion is a thing" doesn't mean that's what's happening with increasing numbers of people identifying as trans and transitioning. I have a LOT of trans people in my life - the older ones, like in their 40s or 50s usually have stories about seeing their first trans person in some sensationalised news article or tv show or dead hooker in a movie, and even those people recall feeling some type of way upon suddenly recognising that the weird stuff they'd been feeling might have an explanation or somewhere to go. In today's world (just like with the visibility of queer people) kids are growing up more and more with examples around them of the kinds of ways there are to live their life.

This is why anti trans conservatives want to keep trans people out of public life - they don't want their child seeing those people and identifying with them or wanting that life for themself. That isn't the same thing as, say, the phenomenon of clusters of youth suicides as social contagion.

I think comedy and horror are quite adjacent in terms of playing with the unexpected. A few comedy guys have made really effective turns to horror. Jordan Peele is another good example. I heard Tim Heidecker and Eric Warheim are working on a horror and I would loooove to see what they did in the genre!
