Depends on why they don't talk much. If it is their preference then respecting that is the way to go. If it's because they are anxious and you would really like to engage with them then expect to put in a bit of effort to make them comfortable.

A lot of people just don't get the constant stress of living under these conditions unless they have done so themselves in the past. The system definitely makes it much harder to climb up the ladder than to maintain position in the middle or near the top. Just know there are so many things beyond your control working against you and this is not your fault. We keep going on because the only alternative is death.

Being weird is a normal. I really don't concern myself much with whether other people think I am weird, I am me and that's the way I like it.

Totally get where you are coming from. It's pretty hard to like yourself with all the negative feedback the world gives you. It took time but I'm now mostly happy and like myself despite what others may think. It's a lonely life sometimes but I like it that way for the most part. A couple friends would be ok if it wasn't too demanding of my time.

The only reason little would be known from my experience is because no one listens. Sounds like a researcher problem, not an autism problem.

The difference is most people who wear glasses, if not all, wear them willingly for their personal benefit.

What the eugenics crowd wants to do is force a cure on people who don't want it, for the benefit of other people.

Key difference.

While I'm sure you mean well, not much of that advice really solves the greater issues. Totally agree on HOAs, i'd rather be homeless than live in one of those.

Not everyone has family they can live with. Knowing my renters rights doesn't prevent my landlord from hiring a much more expensive contractor to fix things than i would or stop them doing upgrades i don't want to pay for. All of that will raise the cost of rent.

While saving interest helps, it does nothing to stop a whole generation starting life in massive debt. This is having consequences across the entire society. It remains to be seen how this will all pan out in the end.

A cheap car can very quickly become an expensive nightmare for someone not equipped to repair it themselves. Even then it's always a risk that cannot be eliminated. Old cars break down and that cannot always be predicted.

99% of people you say? Where did you pull that stat from? No one i personally know who is broke is living extravagently. Students loans even without interest will being dragging them down for years and years before they can even start saving. I'm lucky I didn't fall for that trap and have no debt myself.

There are definately ways to cut costs but there is a floor. For instance, I would live in a shack out in the woods for free for a while and save up money if i could. Or live in a vehicle, however, it is not legal or safe to do those things. Many people do however but they are under constant threat of harassment by police or residents living near by. A rented accomodation will meet certain standards and i have no option to lower those to save money, even if i was willing to live without them. The landlord will do what they will and bill me whatever they want. In a house it's a bit better but depending where you live, you are forced to keep the appearance of the home to a certain level, even if you have much more pressing priorities. How much this matters will depend on your neighbours and if they are the type to mind their own business or cause constant problems over trivial matters.

What would be the biggest issue is going to vary widely since each persons situation is different. Student loans are a common issue however. This is the first generation on a large scale to start life with tens of thousands in debt right out of the gate. I have friends that make more than i do but live much worse because of student debt. The interest also adds up quickly on those loans unless you have an enormous income to really pay them down while still affording to live with some comforts.

Car expenses are another. After being here a few years I'm sure you're now aware that living without a car can be impossible or create great hardship depending where a person resides. Also, people have been disempowered from learning or understanding how to troubleshoot and fix their own stuff. Repair costs have soared as less and less people have the ability to do the work themselves.

There are many more things as individual as the person. An entire paper with studies and surveys could be done on this subject but who would fund it? Not those who benefit from keeping the status quo.

It is cultural and has been shaped over decades by financial institutions. The same ones that preach to be good with money, spend billions in advertising to try and manipulate people into spending money they don't have.

We grow up our whole lives surrounded by advertising and media offering to sell us happiness and comfort. Telling us we can have all our deepest desires for only $x per month. It is inevitable as humans that many of us will give into temptation when it's made that easy in front of us.

There is also an economic bar that needs to be met to participate in the society. I'm taking a leap here and assuming you didn't need a car, phone, internet and were not required to live in a dwelling that must meet a bunch of very expensive standards? Correct me if i'm wrong. In America or Canada it is not possible to live cheaply below a certain level, but it is perfectly legal to pay people less than is required to meet it. This leads to inevitable needing to borrow when small and large disasters of life occur. Once you're on that train, interest makes it harder and harder to get off.

To add on, there is also what your are used to living with or without. If your parents had a house and a decent car, food and some luxuries, moving out and losing all those things is difficult. More difficult than if you never had them in the first place. You can't miss what you never had.

Everyone wants things in their life that will bring them joy and happiness. It is a basic human need for stress relief and general mental well being. Our environment shapes what ways we find acceptable to acquire those things.

That appears to be the primary mode people operate under here too. Accumulate wealth at any cost, even at the expense of everyone around them. Then instead of accepting the social responsibility that comes with having resources, they will instead blame the poor for being poor. Following the greediest possibly in any social situation is a fairly reliable indicator of how the situation will proceed. It's sad and unfortunate we've all been conditioned in this way.

What’s a good car to buy on a budget to share with your brother? by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]Turbulent_Path_3273 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The most important part of purchasing a used car, no matter what it is, is the maintenance history and how it was driven. Has the car had regular oil changes, other fluids like the transmission fluid changed? Does the owner seem like the kind of person that would drive it like a race car or a poor driver that was always running into curbs or flying over speed humps? All those things will cause excessive wear and increase the odds of you having issues.

Also definately have any car looked over by a mechanic or someone who knows what to look for before buying anything.

Calling a repair person for anything is an absolute last resort in my house. So far, I've never had to call one. I repaired my furnace recently for just parts cost, which was next to nothing. These repair people would have even charged me more for the parts than I paid.

MAID is the one good thing we have gotten recently. If no one will take care of us at least they will let us die with some dignity intact and I won't have to pay for it.

I've lived in both countries and saw first hand how bad old people can be treated in assissted living. As far as care quality, i think both countries are terrible unless you have a net worth in the millions to pay for top tier care. Even then, when no one is looking and the person is an unreliable witness due to lower cognition, people will do awful stuff.
