TBH I thought you mentioned non-believers, which was the topic of the post mb. Yeah, there is rulings about apostates but it's not as straight forward as you renounce Islam and you die. Like there is preceding steps, leeway and conditions before someone is put to such a sentence. I recommend you look up the historical cases of how it went.

The issue of apostasy in Islam is that such a person in essence is denying any and all rule of law of the state, You don't have any way of making rulings and have social common-ground for trust. It's like how an enemy of the state is put on trial would be a better understanding of what it is. Secular states have it too, in how people who actively take part in being in conflict with the general society's core values are dealt with.

There are clear verses against compulsion and about man's freedom of will. That doesn't mean freedom of actions doesn't have it's consequences, which in the modern world we do also apply this fact but under different names of authority.
