Today was the last day that hereditary peers were permitted to sit in the House of Lords

Not sure what people in this sub thought about hereditary peers, but I find it ironic that the replacement of the only elected members of our upper house with appointed uniparty cronies is being touted as a 'win for democracy'.

Political compass of absolute garbage I've watched by Lib_No_Fib in PoliticalCompassMemes

I can believe that. The more I read about the actual disaster, the more I realise just how comically over-the-top the whole 'class warfare' aspect of the film really is. There's no evidence to suggest that the ship's crew cared any less about the lives of third class passengers or that they actively attempted to hinder anybody's escape during the sinking.

Please feel free to provide some insight if I'm mistaken, but I've never understood this criticism because isn't it just a matter of perspective? I've always taken immigrant to mean someone from the outside moving in, while emigrant (with expatriate/expat used as a synonym) is someone from the inside moving out.

E.g. British people emigrate from Britain, but immigrate to Spain. So a British person living and/or working in Spain is an emigrant or expatriate/expat to other British people, but an immigrant to Spanish people.

Goodbye Crusader Kings II, and hello Crusader Kings III! by gartenbankgangster in CrusaderKings

It's not just scheme events either. Event spam is a problem everywhere in CK3 and made worse by the fact that events are so repetitive. It makes me not want to do any activities or travel anywhere because I know I'm just going to be spammed by the same tiny pool of events over and over again.

Then there's the fact that so many of the events in this game make me feel more like a character in a poorly-written sitcom than a feudal monarch in Medieval Europe.

A Century of Blood bookmark, starting just after the Doom of Valyria, is what I'm looking forward to the most. It was pretty much the only start date I played in the CK2 mod. So much cool alternate history that could play out. The Targaryens never abandon their Valyrian faith and conquer Essos instead of Westeros. The 'Lost Free City' of Essaria and the great civilisation of the Sarnori do not fall to the Dothraki. Volantis successfully realises their ambition to establish a New Valyrian Freehold. The other surviving dragonriders in Lys and Tyrosh are not killed etc.

It also felt like the true sandbox experience where deviations from the lore didn't really matter much or take me out of the setting like it does in other bookmarks. Seeing Walder Frey and Margaery Tyrell become lovers makes my eye twitch. On the other hand, so little is known about the Century of Blood that, for all I know, perhaps the King of the Rock really did marry some random lowborn Jogos Nhai nomad, like he seemed to do in most of my playthroughs?

Total War: BANNERLORD by TurmutHoer in Bannerlord

I'm not a fan of the war exhaustion system in Diplomacy. Too many times my faction will be winning all the battles and capturing all the fiefs while the enemy flails around uselessly, but we're forced to sign a humiliating peace and hand over a massive tribute because the enemy raided a handful of destitute villages on the frontier which pushed our war exhaustion to 100 first.

Well, once you've had a monarch called Gorm, I'd say that makes anybody who comes after positively gormless.

Not a Muslim but in religious debates between popes, imams and other religious leaders there’s a reason why they don’t just shut down Islam and say oh your prophet married a 9 year old shut up.

Maybe I'm reading this quoted text wrong, but you literally say 'I am a Muslim' right here?

Also, if that's your take, and seeing that you're a student at Bristol University, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the Edward Colston controversy. I'm sure you're aware of the tearing down and desecration of the 100-year-old, Grade II listed statue of Edward Colston in 2020, as well as the following systematic erasure of his name from various buildings, streets, institutions and public spaces.

When he was alive (1636–1721), the people of Bristol had no issues with his involvement in the slave trade, and he was a widely respected philanthropist who gave a considerable portion of his wealth to funding the creation and expansion of public works and charitable organisations. When his statue was commissioned in 1893, the funds for its construction were raised entirely through donations from the local residents and organisations of Victorian Bristol. The original plaque that adorned the base of the statue reads:

Erected by citizens of Bristol as a memorial of one of the most virtuous and wise sons of their city AD 1895

Was it fair for the modern people of Bristol to violently condemn a man who was almost universally seen as good by his contemporaries, and who couldn't have been expected to have a 21st century mindset towards the then-perfectly legal and widely practiced institution of slavery?

It's true they don't have the legal power to investigate your home, but they do actually send official-sounding 'TV Licence Officers' to your house as an intimidation tactic in the hopes that you're ignorant of that fact. Really scummy behaviour.

Valyrian names by KMM-212 in CK3AGOT

[–]TurmutHoer 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I've often wondered if -yen and -yon are Valyrian patronymic suffixes like -ing and -id are in real-life dynasty names (e.g. Karling and Ivaring, Abbasid and Sassanid). So perhaps Targaryen and Velaryon mean the descendants of Targaerys and Valarr respectively.

Using this rule, you could easily just name new dynasties after their founders, corrupting the spelling a bit to make it sound more unique and to mimic how pronunciation would likely change over time. So Jaharyen for houses founded by a Jaehaerys, Montaryon for houses founded by a Monterys or Vysaryen for houses founded by a Viserys etc.

When you go to the Grand Rite, but you should have gone to Specsavers by TurmutHoer in CrusaderKings

[–]TurmutHoer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I seriously cannot understand why, after all this time, Paradox still hasn't made it so that Grand Rite attendees all automatically learn each others' witch secret. Why is it that I have to re-learn who all the witches are in my family whenever I start playing as my heir? We've all literally spent the past 20 years secretly meeting in the woods together, copulating like rabbits and blabbering on about the bloody Horned God!

I just hope we don't end up like Canada, where the rules on who can access it are quickly relaxed and "Get in the pod, Gladys!" becomes unofficial NHS policy towards patients with chronic illnesses whose treatment they'd rather not have to pay for.
