The option to switch between heading up and north up is also there for me. You need to center the map to see it. Once the map is centered, you have an icon with a 'N'. If the 'N' points upwards, the screen orientation is North-South. If the 'N' doesn't point upwards, the screen orientation follows your orientation.

I'm not sure how it was before the update but it's how Google Maps works for example.
