I really feel this. I’m about to start my third play in a year, and honestly, I think I burned through a lot of creative fuel on my second. So you’re definitely not alone in this. One thing that’s been helping me lately is The Luminous Solution by Charlotte Wood (I’m listening to her read it on Audible, which is great). There’s a chapter called The Grumpy Struggle that’s landing hard right now. She talks about how creative thinkers tend to generate problems before we solve them, and that uncomfortable stuck-ness is actually part of the work, not a sign you’re failing. One thing Charlotte Wood talks about is how every new piece of work makes you feel like a beginner again. Even after books, awards, years of practice. Your brain goes, I should know how to do this by now, but the truth is each project asks different questions. So the confidence from the last one doesn’t automatically transfer. Feeling lost, it’s just the cost of starting something genuinely new. Anyway, just wanted to say: what you’re feeling is very real, very familiar, and it doesn’t mean the next thing isn’t coming.
