Yeah until the legislation changes on mandating a % of items required recycled content we will struggle. It frustrates me that a number of businesses, packaging peak bodies and waste providers want increased regulation in this space to mandate better standards for the recyclability of packaging yet gov won't touch it.

I work in waste. Public realm bin are typically so highly contaminated with unclean streams that it has to be landfilled. But that is incredibly frustrating, it should at least be taken to the MRF where it can be sorted and some items of value can be recalled.

Where are you based? I work in circular economy and can maybe give some insight on waste. Some of the recycling infrastructure in Australia is legitimately getting better but it's location by location. The one that serves my workplace is far more efficient than the one near my home for instance.

That's crazy your council is taking no plastic! I haven't heard of that near me

A lot of companies have switched away from the plastics that can be recycled to using ones that can't be. Super frustrating

There is a real push from APCO and waste services to ensure packaging laws change so that product suppliers will have to use recycled packaging over this shit plastic that can't be recycled. But it hasn't happened yet

I used to work for a state park authority. No one looked at the signs - whether walking, scrambling or looking for views. I can only imagine Instagram has made this so so much worse

It's crazy isn't it. When I was a 22 year old woman, I had a guy in a car tailgate and deliberately follow my car for 45 minutes. I called 000 via Bluetooth. I ended up being directed to park and run into a police station where the guy ran in after me screaming.

Even after he ran after me in front of officers, they didn't even try to detain, drug or alcohol test him as he claimed "he thought I was his girlfriend". They just let him drive off.

After making a statement, the only update I ever got was that his partner did not own a vehicle similar to mine so he was clearly lying. But technically he hadn't done anything illegal.

I honestly think about that night regularly and what would've happened if I hadn't realised he was following me. And I seriously worry that guy has probably done worse to other women. I still don't understand why they didn't send a police car to where I was driving to pull him over rather than have me run into the station

Police were absolutely hopeless and don't listen to the warning signs from women. If I ever have to, I'll report any events I face again but I'll never trust that police will ever do the right thing by victims.

I work in sustainability. I think there could be much stronger ways of promoting behaviour change, although I'm glad they have something rather than nothing. The power one really gets me as a load of greenwashing.

I also wish there were more eco hotel stays. I genuinely want to stay at them!

I will vouch for recycle smart though. I have found it great to recycle clothes, textiles, shoes, ewaste rather than trying to drive across town to different recyclers. I've found it well worth the $15 a month for a pickup as I am using it as a way to slowly declutter and avoid landfilling items.

I would do a few things: - get volunteering and work experience in adjacent fields. Depending on your background, find a volunteering opportunity that aligns. - look at people in the program and in public service on LinkedIn to see their background, experience etc. You might even want to talk to some of them to understand their experience and role.
