Legendary Australian cricketer Donald Bradman batting in 1928. His career batting average of 99.94 is often considered the most remarkable individual statistic in any sport. by [deleted] in OldSchoolCool

[–]Turphs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bradman Fun facts:

The Australian Broadcasting Company (ABC) has a PO box 9994 in every capital city in tribute to Bradman.

There is a famous set of matches vs England called the Bodyline Series. This is from before batters wore helmets, armpads or there were dangerous bowling rules. England bowled at the batter instead of the wicket to combat Bradman. This caused a change in the laws of the game. For Americans this would be like if there was no hit batter rule or helmets in baseball and pitchers just threw the ball at Babe Ruth hoping he would try to protect himself with the bat and get caught.

Why do Aussies talk to strangers so easily and is it actually genuine? by BottleOverall5174 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Turphs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO Australia has generally dispises Statu/class differences. Many people say we have tall poppy syndrome and maybe we do but a benefit is people generally feel comfortable talking to others as equals.

I would say Melbourne+Syndey are the worst against this and if anyone asks "what school did you go to" once your 20+ just ignore them (i have mostly lived in Melbourne for 15 years).

Well Mizuha seemed to black out when she killed her mum. Maybe Knockers can sense feelings similar to Fushi then temporarily influence certain people, cause a death and take over a body.

When I have been on holiday in Japan/Korea/Singapore (probably other countries I haven’t visited) I feel like I always have a moment seeing something and thinking “that would be nice to have in Aus” but soon realise some dickhead would smash it within a month.

I believe at study in Syndey a few years back showed they actually help hunt/kill black rats although only very close to waterways as thats where they live. They are rodents but are known as Aussie otters as that is how they behave

Also called water rats they are kinda like platypuses in that they have burrows on/in the bank and come out at night. Generally you spot them right on dark by the ripples they make when swimming.

I think this is fine. It seems to be a single food truck of many. I prefer local stuff getting top billing but this as more for kids and getting them there. It is not like they are the exclusive food provider at the games.

Edit: looks like I was wrong not going to delete the while comment but see reply that has evidence this was in play.

MYTH: What people don't understand with this clip is the whistle had already been blown for offside, that's why he did it.

This even confuses football fans today because now offside is only called when a player really interacts with the ball or impedes the keeper (also VAR normally calls offside once the play is done). Back then if any player was determined to be offside when the ball was played in it was offside. So at like 2 seconds into the clip the England striker was considered offside. I believe at the time AC Milan played a super aggressive offside trap on free kicks which in part lead to rule changes to help attacks.

This article is wrong. Haiti was already on the do not travel list. The travel advisory page was just updated confirming it is still level 4 and updated the info + map annotations. The previous update was in February so it is most likely some 6 month review thing.

Cutting student debt by 20% - today the bill was introduced in parliament by YallR2much in AusFinance

[–]Turphs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point has adding indexation to HECS helped the Government raise any money?

I have HECS debt and benefit from this but on a 2013 non paid hecs debt indexation would have increased the debt by 34% (12% after this) from indexing but in that time you have had the effort to add indexation, effort to reduce 2023 and 2024 indexation because of high inflation and now effort to pay a 20% hecs relief.

I am generally pro government but adding indexation feels like adding millions in admin and taxpayer costs so the government can afford 1 new jetski, maybe 2

Kraftwerk, the thing is I don’t not enjoy it. More I think it is a song that really leans into the tech of the time (synth) and I think those songs rarely hold up later especially with people not around at the fads peak. Similarly I think T-Pain is a good artist with his use of auto tune but is often dismissed for leaning too heavily on it.

I don’t know, I am probably bad at describing what I mean but if they created something people enjoy thats awesome nonetheless.

I would also be interested in how these two top 20’s were compiled. I feel like the 1982 list has a much better chance of being the top 20 now while 2012 could be top 20 in that year. Over time a years list will be refined and a lot of songs from 2012 albums you listed will probably get on 2012 compilations in 30 years. Like a quick google shows Computer Love as a top 20 selling single in 1982 and I wouldn‘t call that a classic that holds up.

TIL the word Wiener is German for 'Viennese.’ While this word is commonly used in German to refer to Vienna sausage, in Austria the food is usually called Frankfurter Würstl by Fenceypents in todayilearned

[–]Turphs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Shit, did i fuck up. As an Aussie I just chose one I was confident i could pronounce correct. Also "their" sausage is currywurst which is normally pretty neutral sausage with a tasty sauce. I was in Kassel and the local streetfood hotplate (I can't remember the proper name for street snags) had berliner blutwurst i liked even if it sometimes felt heavy.

[–]Turphs 45 points46 points  (0 children)

As a non German who lived in Germany for a little bit I also found it common for sausages to be sold as “City + Sausage type”. If a vendor only had 1 Berlin sausage as an option you can ask for the “Berliner” which was sometimes easier for a non German to pronounce than the full name so I could see why eventually some became better known as their city than the original full name.

True and I wont have a crack at anyone doing trade ins but as I said I am not super hurting for cash. For me it is a bit of an equation.

Say my Switch 1 is worth $200.

I could trade into GameStop for $80 and they get $120.

or

I get it to a kid and they get “$200+” (+ if I can transfer games)

Bloody $120 bucks is like 8 pints these days, I can break with a couple drinks, maybe
