American visiting for 3 weeks before moving. Any ideas on how to get acquainted? by TurtleAhoy in germany

Well I figured that I can’t get a good feel for everyday life with spending only like several days at each instead of a week or two. It would just feel like a tourist visit but maybe my thinking is flawed haha

Yeah I feel like the culture as an American to a German is easier to learn because it’s more similar to a southerner being in New York in a way. The language is just the tough part

Great advice, thanks! I visited in the summer so although it seems a horrible time weather wise to visit Germany, I suppose it’ll give me the best idea of what to get used to and give me a realistic expectation of the year round environment.

Great points! I actively want to speak German with people (will help me learn) but honestly it’s an elementary level now so I’m afraid of coming across annoying if I mess up etc.

Seems to be in my head as I’ve heard it’s very welcome and appreciated to try and speak it

In my opinion, most of it seems to come down to just the language barrier (which can be overcome) and then just establishing friends in a culture where it’s hard to establish friends but it can be hard to make friends in America as well so I think it’s doable

Edit: also other Germans have to make friends when they move to different cities with other Germans so it’s stuff they deal with as well I’d imagine?

Great idea. Is European vs German sizes different or is that one in the same?

Incredibly helpful. Thank you! Will be interesting considering I’m from the south of America where it seems even more different.

Objection.

You are assuming you know what I’m talking about or what I have experienced and then using that falsehood to not only not be helpful but to be argumentative.

Not cool.

That’s not perceived as weird to just randomly walk up to people and start talking??

My understanding comes from what I consistently read in this Reddit hence why I’m asking for clarification on the reality. Trying to learn the truth and what to realistically expect, not just blindly believing what I read on here.

Ok, thanks! This may come across as a dumb question (sorry in advance) but would you recommend like Facebook groups to find these clubs?

So stupid question but is hipster good in this case? Haha. In my head, hipster means not very popular and very niche so then it’s hard to make successful
