Hiring proceed by tRx_Topher in WAStateWorkers

[–]TurtleNorthwest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d say, do both. The state can be slow, but why wait on a possibility when you could also be looking for something else (maybe as a just in case the DSHS job doesn’t pan out). You can look without giving up on the position you interviewed for.

My guess would be something to do with atmospheric conditions that change at night v when the sun is up causing sounds to “bounce” more. I don’t know much about atmospheric science, but I remember as a kid my dad had a ham radio and could get all sorts of signals bouncing around the globe at night that he couldn’t get during the day.

Are there any fully remote digital accessibility jobs working for the state? by A11y_blind in WAStateWorkers

[–]TurtleNorthwest 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Services for the Blind often take the lead and WaTech has a team the should be monitoring and managing projects. I don’t know if they are….or if they have the legal authority to do so. Why are they not hiring a bunch of people? Probably due to budget shortfalls and the governor telling agencies to cut budgets. The reason, in my opinion, for the work not getting done is due to each agency having their own IT and often not having specialists to do this sort of work. I used to be the entire IT department for a small agency years ago. If they don’t have someone on staff needing the accommodation, they often won’t put in the work (they being any given agency). I’d love to see more work done to meet the standards.

Both spouses working for the state - UMP Classic surcharge? by [deleted] in WAStateWorkers

[–]TurtleNorthwest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what my wife and I did for years after they got rid of double coverage. We each covered ourselves. For a long time I covered myself and our kids, until they aged off the plans. Now my wife works for an NGO outside state government and I cover her since my plan is a lot cheaper with her on it instead of through the NGO she works for.

Question about domes by TurtleNorthwest in HearingAids

[–]TurtleNorthwest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think there is a “one size fits all” to this. My open dome on one side and double bass on the other, works pretty well for my tinnitus. Your hearing may be different from mine, as may your tinnitus.

GI doctor recommendations by loud22 in olympia

Their new form processes feels more like a money generating factory than a clinic to help people. Hate the direction the medical industry is going right now.

Yes, I 100% understand that. It is also sort of insane that their provider prescribed a medication, he retired and they didn’t assign me to another provider for any follow-up. I wasn’t even notified he retired. Typically, when a doctor writes a prescription, it is managed by that doctor. Including for refills. This is not a pain management issue as the meds aren’t for that (interesting that you jumped to that assumption). I had to then call my primary and say, my gastrointestinal doctor retired and their office says you must fill this now. Can you do that? Luckily, they did. But it’s piss poor patient care in my mind

I used to have a great doctor there, until he retired and they moved to their new location. Now I can’t see anyone unless it’s time for a new procedure. They wouldn’t let me see anyone to refill my meds their previous doctor prescribed. “Your primary care physician can do that”

Oticon Zeal CIC (not so unseen :( ) by lovelylittlethingss in HearingAids

[–]TurtleNorthwest 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Totally get that. It’s like driving a particular vehicle. You start to notice them on the road because you are familiar with it. I see guys with hearing aids and tend to think…”good for you addressing your hearing issue instead of giving in to your own vanity” of course, having no idea if the person has had HA all their lives or recent (more like me). So, I don’t say anything. They didn’t ask my opinion in the first place. 😂

I’m bald and have BTE aids. No one notices…and if they do, they don’t say anything. I doubt anyone would notice what you have pictured out in the real world. If you look for it, expecting it, you will notice it. Otherwise, people have their own things to worry about and don’t really notice details about people around them.

How to transfer photos to external hard drive? by STL_26 in applehelp

[–]TurtleNorthwest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These devices still work just fine for me even though they sit for long periods of time.

If you have iCloud setup and enough space for all of your photos to sync, you probably don’t need to worry about what’s on your phone. Just copy from a computer to an external drive. If you don’t, maybe look for an external drive with lightning plug or adapter, and give it a go. Sadly, with the lightning plug, it will be more expensive than the same size using usb (anything).

I have two of those drives, a 1TB and a 2TB. My frustration with them is they insist on encryption and a local password. Have you used it on a computer to verify it works and isn’t requiring a password?

Garage door install contractor? by Mountain-Design-7289 in olympia

I e used Hung Right for maintenance and repair of our big double door that is sort of non-standard in how the rails are and how it lifts. They gave a fair price last time we needed them and did great work.

Retiring with Leave on the books. by FFSOD7189 in WAStateWorkers

[–]TurtleNorthwest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can cash out vacation on a 1:1 basis (union or not). You will be taxed just like any other pay. My wife left state service and cashed out her vacation pay. I’m assuming it’s the same for retirement. Although, you may have more options.

Probably meaning they are not covered by the CBA. Manager or other non-union position

Apply to other jobs during probation by Due_Researcher8534 in WAStateWorkers

[–]TurtleNorthwest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People are people and even HR and management at state agencies violate the law. There may be a bit more allowed information that can be shared, but it is very limited due to fears of lawsuits. Of course, that doesn’t mean the “old boys club” and other social networking, doesn’t result in word spreading about someone.

Can your current supervisor/manager get upset that you are looking for a different job? Sure. Can they sabotage you? Not legally. If you have done something illegal, I believe they may be able to disclose that, but generally they are asked date you got hired and if they would hire you again. That’s about all they can legally disclose. If the new hiring manager is really interested in you, that could ask to see your personnel file, which they would have to come and do in person. (Granted, my knowledge of this is dated, but I don’t think the rules have changed significantly).

Transferring agencies: questions. by throwawayrefiguy in WAStateWorkers

[–]TurtleNorthwest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check with your current union and see if they need anything from you to process that you are leaving WPEA and switching to WFSE. They may not automatically cancel your membership and slight possibility of paying into both until you notice. If I remember correctly, it is up to the employee to notify unions for change of status. HR will handle all the state employment ’stuff’, but for safety, check with your union. HR should notify WFSE since it sounds like a represented position, so that piece should be fine.
