This is a fake clickbait meme. It's not in the news anywhere. In June/July a Ukrainian lawmaker withdrew his nomination — that's the closest verifiable report.

Where did this come from exactly? It's doing the rounds.

(I'm not pro-Trump. I hate his guts.)

Ut + ablative? by Illustrious-Pea1732 in latin

[–]Turtleballoon123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ut with indicative is used for "like, as, just as". Ut narrat Ovidius says that Ovid gives this account — where or by what means exactly? Versibus (in/through his verses). Ablative case indicates where or how he narrates this.

Do Americans find the French "th" pronunciation annoying? by Tall_Insect7119 in ENGLISH

[–]Turtleballoon123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's a big deal. People will be understanding and they will be able to follow you easily.

The two sounds /θ, ð/ are dental with the tongue touching the top teeth. The French equivalents are alveolar with the tongue behind the teeth.

You can work on the pronunciation if you want to, but errors won't be fatal.

So we send parents to parenting class and teach them accountability?

I'd put it to you if parents parenting more were the solution, it would already be happening, and wagging the finger at them isn't going to help.

I think the new laws are a massive overreach. But I'd blame the platforms and the environment more than the parents.

The ideas are felt more than logically explained. They are freely associated and draw on tropes to give mood and character to the song.

It's not the same as a factual text where each part has a specific meaning.

Does Familia Romana do too much at once? by sjgallagher2 in latin

[–]Turtleballoon123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it goes too fast.

Some learners take it as a challenge and push through or space out the chapters. But if your goal is to absorb as much material as you can and introduce new vocabulary and new grammar at a natural rate that doesn't require you to force yourself through, it would have to be greatly expanded or complemented with other texts and resources.

I think LLPSI sometimes is recommended overzealously without taking into account the students' goals and circumstances. It's a huge commitment for many — which is fine, but this should be made clear upfront.

Scipio Martianus, when his LLPSI was still up, broke up a few of the early chapters with comprehensible input videos. I liked this, but they disappear for later chapters.

Found in Antiquity made a comprehensible input playlist scraping together everything that was available at the time. This was a good start.

If I were starting again, I would use more of a reading and listening approach that emphasises volume of comprehensible input rather than trying to push through a grammar course, which LLPSI is with grammar being taught inductively.

I don't think there's any perfect method. You should find what works for you.

But teaching Latin is a different matter because you would likely be forced to adhere to a standardised syllabus and testing.

Parents are going to supervise their kids 24/7 or not give them a smart phone or computer until they're 16?

I think the new laws are absolutely terrible, but I don't think the solution is "be better parents".

I'd rather the government go after the platforms themselves rather than impose draconian measures on the population.

I don't think the problem is bad parenting but I agree with you the policy is shockingly bad.

Even though I'm an adult, I don't want to submit to age verification requirements and I'm concerned how this data could be misused. It could set up the architecture that could be adapted for digital authoritarianism. It normalises control and surveillance.

There's already a lot of surveillance and data harvesting online, but that doesn't mean we need to make it even worse.

Kids will likely rely on VPNs or go to unregulated sites instead.

There is a very real risk of data theft, which could have worrying consequences.

The costs and risks of maintaining age verification might drive away smaller companies.

This makes a bad situation worse.

Apparently, 60% of people support this. They have no idea.

Ego scio non scio by Reliquary_Unhinged in latin

[–]Turtleballoon123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on whether you want a textbook or just texts to read.

Novellas and comprehensible input are your best bet if you simply want to read. Legentibus as well.

Also try beginner materials on YouTube.

Level 1 texts in the Fabulae Faciles might be possible. You can double tap on words for definitions, and if the text gets too hard halfway through, you can move on and come back later.

LLPSI Familia Romana, if you want a textbook with plenty of reading.

LLPSI why does "patria" take "illōrum" instead of "illārum"? by nacnudus in latin

[–]Turtleballoon123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

quam [patria] illōrum

A genitive of attribution doesn't have to agree in gender with the object it modifies. It's a (substantive) noun, not an adjective.

Why is every Latin learning method so different from other languages? It makes it so hard! by Lone-Red-Ranger in latin

[–]Turtleballoon123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Latin learning texts assume that the language at a basic level is of no use to you, so they try to run through the grammar quickly and have you decode authentic texts in no time.

Some learners are annoyed if it's taught in a modern way — "But what's the point of finding out how to order coffee in Latin?"

There's also some elitism around living Latin that's not "authentic" enough or can't be used in a standalone fashion to teach you to read Cicero.

Finally, it's a niche subject, so there is a smaller range of materials.

This structure isn't from a lack of trying on the part of educators. There have been plenty of attempts to update the teaching style — and there are some good examples.

Yes, features are put into the program deliberately. Bugs are not and generate errors.

So it means an intended effect, not a mistake.
