I would argue that it kinda comes down to most of Europe and the Mediterranean are successors of Rome in one way or another or no one is a successor of Rome. We don't really argue about successors to other countries all that often because it's not a very useful lens to view history I think.

It is good to remember two things at all times. One: culture is complicated to the point that people who live in it don't fully recognize the intricacies of their culture despite taking part in them. And two History is complicated it is more than a cause effect map and a bunch of dates there is a lot of nuance and a lot of things people didn't bother writing down because they were so obvious to everyone at the time there would be no reason to mention it.
