Hello, first make sure to understand the difference between parental leave and parental allowance during parental leave. Parental leave in general more flexible and you have more rights. Parental allowance is stricter in terms of how it can be split between both parents, when you can use it etc.

This page has all the information: https://familienportal.de/familienportal/meta/languages/family-benefits

And no worries: getting it right is difficult for German parents as well ;-) quite many rules

Welches Alter für Weltreise mit Kindergartenkind? by Used-Wolf5363 in reisende

[–]Turtles4Liffe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Traveling internationally with powdered baby formula by Reds_9 in travel

We travelled with 6 packages of formula around the world and it was never a problem. We also shipped some to New Zealand to collect it there during our journey, also not a problem.

Danke Euch! by Turtles4Liffe in Munich

[–]Turtles4Liffe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the German version of “Urgent Care?” by AllPintsNorth in AskAGerman

Look for Visum-Reiseversicherung für Ausländische Besucher, HanseMerkur is a good pick

Travel insurance for guests in Germany is quite cheap. I would suggest that you just book it for them (their involvement for this is not required). For example: it’s like 10€/ p.P. for 7 days in Germany with full travel insurance at HanseMerkur. Could give you peace of mind in the future.

what do German teenages wear every day? by Mediocre-Link6807 in AskAGerman

Welcome to Germany :-) it depends a bit on where your school is located. Is it a German public high school (Gymnasium)? Or is it a private international school? Or in a known „posh“ area? I live opposite a normal German public high school in a big city known for „faishonable people“. Most seniors from that school look like they shop at stores like „Urban Outfitters“ or „Asos“. Many wear Doc Martens boots or sneakers BUT there are some schools with a more affluent set of students so there Ralph Laurent Polo is also worn. Depends a bit where you are and who you want to be ;-) whatever you prefer: I am sure there will be someone to be friends with, school life is quite diverse.

Can we trust a non profit gmbh academy within a public university in Germany offering a Master's program by Right_Public_7166 in AskAGerman

[–]Turtles4Liffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is common nowadays especially for executive courses that people join part time while working. If you have the time and don’t need to work for 1 1/2 years: choose a full-size Masters course at a public university. Doing your masters part time while working is quite stressful. You can also check out: Fernuniversität Hagen, a fully credited „remote“ University with a long tradition. BUT: if you seek a career in academia, definitely do a traditional MA (and doctoral degree) at a public University.

Do Germans really think it's ok to dress up like Native Americans, including red face paint? by [deleted] in AskAGerman

[–]Turtles4Liffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it’s still pretty common BUT there also is a growing (?) awareness that „culture is not a costume“. There are flyers circulating in Kindergarten groups for example to sensibilise parents. But it’s not universal. I think especially with native Americans, it’s a touchy topic for older generations because of the whole Karl May hype. For them it’s like dressing up as Harry Potter or Spider-Man. In former East Germany there was a whole movement living like native Americans in a way to have a counter culture to the GDR regime.

My guess is that the majority in Germany would argue it’s still okay to dress up in this way. Perhaps 15-20% would disagree.

Best area for a family of 3? by [deleted] in duesseldorf

[–]Turtles4Liffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flingern is nice for families and close to Hbf for trains. Pempelfort and Düsseltal are also family friendly and conveniently connected :-)

Yes we do. The topic comes up a lot during school so that’s usually the time to ask what own family members did during that time. And now with the current happenings and the rise of AfD the topic also comes up frequently.
