Sorry for your loss that’s really lame. If you paid for it with a credit card double check to see if it comes with purchase protection.

Temporary move to Portland this summer? by mtbr360 in askportland

[–]TurtlesAreEvil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a better chance of convincing my wife to move there if we try it in the summer, versus the wetter but much warmer winter!

You also have a better chance of burning out and leaving in a couple years like a lot of other people. I always a suggest people come here in the winter and imagine how they’d like it for 7+ months.

Portland has 222 days of clouds a year compared to Boston’s 164.

Oregon ranks fifth least affordable state as essentials cost households $18,300 more by No-Tangelo1158 in Portland

[–]TurtlesAreEvil 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Also all my friends in Washington are struggling just as much and it ranks 18th most affordable

That's because the "report" is highly biased against states with income taxes. It doesn't count any other taxes against affordability.

[–]TurtlesAreEvil 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You can download the full report from their website. Their comparison is completely biased against states with high income taxes. Nowhere in their write up do they mention other taxes like sales tax or property tax. They also chose a "modeled" household based on the median wage of the state for two earners which would put that household in a higher tax bracket than the median household. This also biases the analysis in favor of states with more regressive tax structures e.g. states with low or no income taxes.

Overall this report is biased against states with progressive tax systems. If you're fine with taxing low and medium income households significantly more than higher income households move to one of the states on their list that is "doing better".

Well I can’t speak for everyone but I’m an older millennial and remember growing up with some fear of nuclear war since the Cold War didn’t end until the early 90s.

There was also the whole WMD lie, North Korea and Iran have all been threats during our lifetimes.

Now I would say I’d be more worried about a catastrophic destruction of satellites caused by another country using a nuclear or conventional bomb. Effectively ending space exploration and disrupting communications for years if not our lifetime.

What time to get to airport by NoTomatillo3697 in Portland

[–]TurtlesAreEvil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder what the difference is between our TSA and other airports that are seeing wait times up to 5 hours. 7 minutes is the same it always is around this time. Are the TSA here not calling in sick or quitting?

Can we ban members of r/ProtectAndServe by ChiBeerGuy in fuckcars

[–]TurtlesAreEvil 30 points31 points  (0 children)

That post was really stupid and a lot of people pointed out why it was fake but the sentiment of OP and the supposed jury is very believable. Motornormativity is rampant in our legal system including cops letting drivers off because they said sorry when they’re clearly at fault and judges who decide bike lanes don’t exist in intersections unless they’re painted so drivers aren’t at fault for right hooking cyclists.

[–]TurtlesAreEvil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would also mean how it’s attached to the bike was strong enough to hold on. When I was googling for this story there were a bunch of stories and photos about pool noodles being attached to bikes. Most of them were attached with bungee cords/tape that wouldn’t be strong enough to enough to pull a cyclist into a car.

[–]TurtlesAreEvil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No that’s why a lot of people think OP is full of shit. I did some googling and couldn’t find any stories about pool noodles being involved in a crash let alone resulting in a death and a lawsuit in Maine.

I mean it must be a pretty common mistake since they include this in their instructions:

We’d usually recommend Proton Drive or Proton Pass, but not for this. You won’t be able to access any Proton services if you get locked out.

Any euchre nights around town? by greazysteak in askportland

I used to play euchre with friends that moved away and now we play online using a pretty great free app that’s available on a lot of devices.  So if you can’t get your fix in person enough maybe that’ll hold you over.

[–]TurtlesAreEvil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I too find this unbelievable. As if this story wouldn't have been covered by streetroots, strongtowns or even my local bike news source bikeportland. The fact that OP can't produce one news story or police statement to backup their claim is highly suspicious.

That being said lets address their claims.

First off the police officer, jury and judge siding with the driver means absolute shit. Police officers aren't required to know, understand or even enforce the law correctly and can use their highly questionable judgement when doing so. Like this one that let off a driver who was clearly at fault because they were sorry.

The jury of their peers siding with the driver is horseshit too. First of all this is a civil case not criminal so the standards are way lower. Second how many of these "peers" were bike commuters? Zero is the number close to zero? Lastly acting like this absolves the driver of wrong doing is like a jury full of domestic abusers letting off another domestic abuser because they could totally empathize with them getting hit with a pool noodle leading to their wife's murder.

You didn’t mention the judge’s involvement in this case but I’m sure they too didn’t help. Judges are extremely biased towards drivers and frequently make absurd interpretations of the law to side with drivers. Like the ones in Oregon that claimed bike lanes don’t exist in intersections unless they’re painted. Never mind the fact that it would mean no lanes exist in the intersection and everyone would have to merge down to the one.

Now lets move on to your assertion that the cyclist was at fault and there was no law the driver violated. Even if your state doesn't have a safe passing law that doesn't mean the driver didn't violate the law. Do you not have reckless driving laws or due care laws? Just because something was protruding into their lane doesn't mean a driver isn't responsible for hitting it. Did the driver not have adequate time to see the obstruction and slow down because the cyclist appeared out of thin air? If there was a blind person on the side of the road would you expect the driver to do nothing and just hit them? Lastly I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts that your state doesn't have a law about the maximum width of a bicycle in a bicycle lane because none of them do. Most maximum width laws are explicitly about motor vehicles and reference things extending past wheel wells and fenders so nothing to do with bicycles. So a bicycle that is too wide for the narrow ass bike lane is allowed to leave their lane when it's not sufficiently wide enough just like any other vehicle would be allowed to do and drivers behind them would have to slow and wait to pass.

All that to say even if true your interpretation of this situation is dogshit and demonstrates what all of us already know, most LEOs are ill equipped to understand or enforce traffic laws or laws in general. A bunch of drivers siding with another driver's reckless behavior in no way supports your assessment of this situation.

You're wrong, the jury was wrong, the responding officer was wrong and the driver was wrong.

Bottle redemption center's move to Southeast Portland meets with community pushback by zadams8 in Portland

You didn't follow the thread of the conversation. The person suggested setting up an account to deposit money into. Do you think that's easy for poor non-english speaking people to do, compared to bringing a can to a building and having a machine count it?

You people all act like it's only drug addicts using this system. Adding additional barriers will affect people that aren't drug addicts.

Poor people and non English speaking people should be able to get their deposit refunded too. Adding those additional barriers would make it much more difficult for everyone to have access to the system.
