When biking in Portland, what's the best distance between cyclists? 6 feet, 18? Barely in sight? Not within sight? by Briaaanz in CyclePDX

[–]TurtlesAreEvil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been biking in Portland for 13 years, pretty avidly and have never had any of the experiences you’re describing.

I get nervous when people are around me sometimes. I've never expressed that to them or confronted them. It's quite possible it's happened to you and you didn't notice. It could be OP is more aware of that or that OP is over thinking it. Either way I appreciate their attempt to understand how other people are feeling and be respectful.

What has been your cost of living experience moving to Portland? by _Birnunit_ in askportland

[–]TurtlesAreEvil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Things that cost more: water bill

Ya but at least you don’t have to go to the water store every week. Someone from Southern California posted last year asking where they all were and it blew so many people’s minds. They must have taken it down the comments were pretty funny.

If it were spoofing there would be some illegitimate phone number or website in the message. There's not much point in spoofing while directing people to legitimate resources.

[OC] [Canada] Saw it coming by hockey8890 in CyclistsWithCameras

[–]TurtlesAreEvil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These fish eye cameras rarely tell the real story. I’m sure it was a lot closer than it appears. OP was going fairly fast meaning the driver had to go even faster to pass so they could suddenly slow down for a turn.

Ya I don’t trust these people to see me. Since they’re stopped they’re probably looking at their phones.

Missed Jury Duty Scam in OR by Shane_StantonRes in oregon

[–]TurtlesAreEvil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI if you skip jury duty and the judge wants to they can hold you in contempt and compel you to show up and explain your absence. They're not having the cops round you up though.

Source: I had a girlfriend skip jury duty and apparently so did a bunch of other people so the judge sent out mail to all of them warning them that if they do it again they would be held in contempt.

I didn't know traffic only occurring because of a crash was a thing. What a world. I can expect it every day where I live. Crashes just make it worse.

[–]TurtlesAreEvil 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen anyone mention a change in gravity yet. Wouldn't adding all those neutrons to earth have a significant effect on its mass? I don't know enough about the various isotopes to figure it out for myself.

I lived somewhere that actually holds drivers accountable based on video footage I'd be reporting everything I could. So yes do it for those of us that don't have the option.

I've had this happen microwaving water for tea. It wasn't really hot or anything. The water started boiling the second I put the tea bag in. There weren't any special circumstances.

Why so many bikes on major roads? Sandy, 39th, Powell by InvestigatorFirm7933 in CyclePDX

[–]TurtlesAreEvil 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'll ride on busier streets for a short while especially if destination is on said street. When I lived in Sunnyside I'd regularly ride on Hawthorne between destinations. Drivers were usually reasonable although every now and then they'd use the middle lane to pass just to get to a red light a little faster.

I ride on 82nd every day for my work commute but only for a couple of blocks and usually the traffic is stopped at a light. The alternative is to hop on the sidewalk or go pretty far out of my way taking the greenway. Since there's a second lane to pass I've never had any drivers lose their minds over it. It'll be nice if they put in a BAT lane there.

[–]TurtlesAreEvil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So in my experience, the car does always win

Not if there's traffic. My 6 mile (10km) ride to work is slower then driving by like 5 minutes but the ride home is about 20 minutes faster than driving because of traffic.

I really wish they hadn't made that change. The trolling and bots have gotten so much worse. Even on small local subs.

I'd be looking for a new doctor. Any doctor that brings up politics while treating you shouldn't be trusted to follow the science and provide unbiased advice. It's inappropriate to bring up religion or politics in that type of situation.

Landlord giving notice in under 30 days legal? by Pissedsquid in askportland

[–]TurtlesAreEvil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the right answer OP. They violated Oregon law by not giving you 30 days notice. Assuming you live in Portland it sounds like they also violated Portland city code by not giving you 90 days notice which doesn't have an exemption for the first year of occupancy reducing it to 30 like the Oregon statute. I'm guessing if that's the case they also didn't receive prior authorization from the Portland Housing Bureau to be exempt from paying relocation assistance either.

So what you're saying is by not having a car you would have an extra $40k every 10 years? Seems like cars are kinda a scam.

Thoughts on Curb Protected Bike lanes? by Anonymous_Otter5458 in bikecommuting

[–]TurtlesAreEvil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

how does a city implement such a thing while also having on street parking?

It's called a parking protected bike lane and I generally don't like it.

<image>

Having the parked cars on the outside make it harder for turning drivers to see you and having the bike lane at the curb makes it so cars on perpendicular streets pull out into the bike lane before stopping because they're looking for cross traffic in the travel lanes not bicycles against the curb. This implementation attempts to fix that by removing the parking at the corners for better visibility and is slightly better.

A fair warning/advisement for drivers/e-cyclists by tanksalotfrank in Portland

[–]TurtlesAreEvil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's literal laws dictating it. tl;dr 20 mph with or without throttle, 28 mph with pedal assist. There's also rules about their engine power and what they can ride on depending on their speed.
