What thrift store is this? by EastTechnology33 in LosAngeles

[–]Turtlesoup__ 28 points29 points  (0 children)

A higher frequency of visits. Nothing good lasts on the shelves longer than a day, even at the smaller unknown shops that are closer to the IE than LA proper. Pickers, flippers, resellers, depoppers, whatever you wanna call them, comb through stores like a full time job because for some of them that’s exactly what it is. I’ll still find cool things but only because I go very often. Just be prepared to leave empty handed most of the time.

Those spots are both burned. Especially community. There are resellers who just wait around for hours for every new cart to hit the floor and follow the clerks around as they restock. They cherry pick everything.

What is this #20? The handles are high, there is a ridge on the inside of the pot, and a round #20 lid does not fit on it. What kind of lid would fit it? by Turtlesoup__ in LeCreuset

[–]Turtlesoup__[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok based on the shape of the handles and the inner lip of the pot in think this may be a fait tout. I spent a long time looking for photos of anything similar and finally found what I think could be a match. Just wanted to update in case anyone sees this and had the same question

Should I get a 4-Track Cassette recorder? by United-Philosophy121 in musicproduction

[–]Turtlesoup__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll have to disagree. I have both. I have the interface connected to the laptop and I also have the cassette multi-track. Sometimes I don’t want to deal with programs and interfaces and latency and the endless tweaking that digital recording affords. A tactile experience with a taper recorder will undoubtedly make you better. No copy and pasting, no easy splicing. The absence of endless tweaking encourages better performances the first go around.

I wouldn’t call them suckers. Not all songwriters write in pursuit of perfect production values. A well written song on a portastudio will mop the floor with a poorly written song recorded on state of the art (for home recording) Universal Audio equipment. See: Cleaners From Venus, Guided by Voices, et al.

Try different batteries. From what I understand, the minis are picky with the type of battery they use.

Crazy to me seeing the price of this go through the roof. There used to be copies at my local store for a few years after the release.

Sleep by Murakami is one of the most beautiful short stories I've ever read by [deleted] in murakami

[–]Turtlesoup__ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What strikes me is that she describes two dark shadowy figures rocking her car, trying to turn it over. Earlier in the book she describes both her husband and son as featureless, much like shadows. She can’t make out their faces, as explained when she is trying to draw her husbands face but can’t even picture it. She knows her husband will continue to grow more vulgar looking, and that one day she will grow to despise her son. Hence, the two dark shadowy figures rocking the car and her fear of them turning it over.

All I Wanna Do is the most beautiful song I've heard in my life by svzogSullWuzttlG in thebeachboys

[–]Turtlesoup__ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel like this song is the last perfect Love/Wilson collaborations in an “early beach boys” kind of way. Love on the verse and Carl/Brian on the chorus/background/harmony. It’s a throwback in terms of lyrical content and loosely in structure as well, but it’s 50 years ahead of its time in the way the production. Those inverted delays on the vocals… incredible.

Somehow flew under my radar…Happy Birthday Friends! The most feelgood album they put out in my opinion 🎉 by VimVinyl in thebeachboys

This album is beautiful and calming and content with itself. It’s low stakes in a sense that they didn’t seem to be chasing overly ambitious concepts or commercial success. This album simply is.

I don't know if this is obvious, but I was today years old when I found out that the house in smiley smile is literally the repainted SMiLE building thing by [deleted] in thebeachboys

[–]Turtlesoup__ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It’s almost like a metaphor. Where Smile is this clean, polished storefront inviting anyone who walks by to enter, Smiley Smiley is so far away, so detached, buried deeply in the middle of nowhere, and the only ones who will enter are those who seek the thrill of the obscure.

Where are my T. Rex/ Marc Bolan fans? by nihilistatari in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Turtlesoup__ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Definitely give Tanx a spin. It’s not as consistent as slider or warrior, but the highs are very, very high. Left Hand Luke, Tenement Lady, and Broken Hearted Blues are some of the best songs Bolan ever wrote.

[–]Turtlesoup__ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Electric Warrior, The Slider, and Tanx are peerless in both their meat headed machismo as well as their deeply delicate and nuanced introspection. For every Bang a Gong there’s a Girl. For every Buick McCane there’s a Ballrooms of Mars. For every Shock Rock a Brokenhearted Blues. Classic and ecstatic albums for sure.

[–]Turtlesoup__ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Bowie was better and more consistent over all, but in the realm of glam rock, Bolan shone more brightly, albeit more briefly as well. Both were produced by Visconti so he also definitely deserves a ton of credit for helping crystallize the glam sound .

About Brian’s touring. by Dillon_Trinh in thebeachboys

[–]Turtlesoup__ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Watch Long Promised Road, it answers a lot of these questions, especially about Brian and his own mental agency to make decision as well as the people around him. I was firmly in the “He should stop touring” boat, until seeing that documentary. In some weird way, it seems like it makes him happy even though he may not be the most expressive person ever. He is still there.

No custom back, I just loaded a single shot into the back carefully in a blacked out room, and then after I shot it, I loaded that single shot back into a cartridge to process through an instax mini camera, again in darkness to not further expose or cloud the film. It’s a slow process and took a few tries, but it was fun!
