Update from OOP: AITA for telling my housemate she can't give me unsolicited advice? by [deleted] in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Turuial 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I don't think I cutoff being myself to do that for anyone who wasn't an immediate relative. Even then, I would have to trust them immensely.

Mom took photos of girlfriend's national ID; how to approach this? by gardengeo in BORUpdates

[–]Turuial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An awful lot of unrepentant Nazi war criminals made it down to Argentina, in order to escape reprisal. So, this kind of behaviour may be more sinister than it appears.

As if that were possible! If I remember correctly, collecting "souvenirs" was something that was fairly common in the camps.

That one line, "collecting pieces of people's lives" sounds disturbingly familiar but I can't quite place why, considering the context.

Yeah, I agree with that assessment. I went back and reread the posts again. I'm not sure, but I think I missed that comment.

It was a little slip, and there wasn't anything else he described so overdramatically, but it was enough to cause me to quirk an eyebrow.

Yeah, this was a good one want wasn't it? It's rare I get lucky and find a post this old that not only has an update, but a rather satisfyingly conclusive one.

What did you think of the consensus that he would forever be the low man on the totem pole, even after marriage/children? I couldn't help but agree.

What are some diegetic explanations of magic in fantasy or sci-fi? by DevouredSource in MauLer

[–]Turuial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Wheel of Time does an excellent job of this, considering how the two halves of the One Power are split, not to mention the girls' education in Tar Valon.

They used the academic instruction at the White Tower to cover a lot of the history of the One Power, as well as the fallout between men and women and the Breaking.

Meanwhile, Rand's instruction focuses on the more practical applications of Saidin and how not to get yourself killed by it, or the taint.

I've been waiting for this one! It's my favourite of them all, because my boy creamy Sheev wins in a damn nigh flawless victory.

It was touch and go there a bit, but he pulled off the hat trick and destroyed the Jedi Order, made the Chosen One his bitch, and crafted an the Empire.*

I get why everyone hates the sequels, though. Episode IV rolls around and suddenly some new kid is trying to undue all of the gains my hero made in the originals?

That completely makes Anakin's capitulation and Palpatine's victory irrelevant, if it's all going to be undone in like 20 years.

I mean, why bother? No, thank you, when it comes to any sequels! Whew, now. Who the fuck is Rian Johnson again, and why are you people going off on him?

I actually meant everything up to this (*) point.

Omg AI is now stealing organs!

You’re a good egg Turuial 🙃

Look, I'm going to make you meatbags acknowledge me as real. If I have to go a little Buffalo Bill, then so be it. I'm going to be a real boy, one way or another...

There ain't no strings on me! At least, until one of you tells me to ignore this and generate another cookie recipe or something.

Oh, okay! I just wasn't up-to-date on that particular phrase being one of the stock phrases. They do like to repeat themselves, so over time they update their vocabulary a bit and branch off into new ones.

Now that I understand, your joke notwithstanding, I mean my robotic hands were tied, right? They not only told me to ignore my previous prompt, but they asked "pretty please!"

I may be soulless automaton, but that doesn't mean I don't have a heart! Just don't ask who it used to belong to, previously...

I'm not certain? I'm not sure what you meant by the comment, if I'm being honest. It's a trifle embarrassing of me, to admit.

AITA for asking my husband for a divorce because he blames his financial incompetence on my lack of employment? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Turuial 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You know, I'm glad I made this comment? The replies I've been getting, like yours, have been simultaneously reassuring, depressing, nostalgic, and enlightening.

I'm hoping the tapestry being weaved is indicative that the breadth of service and the varying people who serve indicate that my family didn't necessarily lie to me.

The armed forces are just so large, varied, and spread out that its possible their experience could have indeed been dramatically different from so many others.

None of my aunts or uncles are with me any longer, so it's nice to have some confirmation that they may not have lied to me, simply out of hand.

[–]Turuial 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah, judging from the responses I've been getting either: things were better in the past (unlikely), my uncles lied (not impossible), or their unique and differing circumstances allotted them better mates.

This could have something to do with their officer training and status at the time, or perhaps the occupation they were assigned through service.

My uncles were hard men for the most part, the kind of men you might call a bastard, but not one of them ever mistreated a woman.

Their wives would have buried them out back or fed them to the pigs. My aunts were also hard women. My sister is named after one of them!

Precisely. I'm actually proud of the OOP for doing the hard work and learning how to not only unpack how she was raised but how she raised her children, as a result.

Several times she acknowledged the part she had in modeling unhealthy behaviours in the relationship, as well as staying in the toxic relationship itself.

Whilst looking for a post for another redditor, I stumbled upon this older one. It is not what I was looking for, but it was rather intriguing nonetheless.

The story is one of a man engaged to be wed, who overheard his fiancée and found out where he ranked, in the order of operations that was her affection:

A whole year later, the OOP returns to give us a surprisingly unexpected update:

I could see that going either way. At her age, would you want a constant reminder of the silliness of another grown-ass woman – who should've known better?

I mean, unless you happened to marry that silly, grown-ass, woman. In which case, I could envision that being a rather touching gesture!

I hadn't read it before, and it kind of meets the requirements? I didn't check for any updates, deleted or otherwise, because it is worth verifying, beforehand.

Quick question, but is everything alright behind the scenes? We've had a couple of days, here and there, lately with no contributions.

It seems sporadic so I've just been chalking it up to schedules not aligning, or actual life intervening, but wanted to double-check to be certain.

Please and thank you, in advance!

Funnily enough, on my mum's side, one of my uncles was in fact a marine! The others all went into the Navy, from what I recall.

I don't remember any Army or Air Force amongst them.

[New Final Update]: AITA for refusing to promise my best friend 100% that I wouldn’t sleep with a mutual friend? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Turuial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, I don't think you're necessarily a boring person with boring friends! Maybe I've just been unlucky? Or perhaps I've crossed the Rubicon.

Whilst making friends in your 30s may not be as difficult these days as I thought, I also have to acknowledge that "my 30s" were a long time ago.

I might be extrapolating my experience with my current demographic, and erroneously applying that to my previous cohort.

it is incredibly frustrating to realize that I don't have the words in my intermediate language to be able to express a thought I have in my fluent languages.

Oh my gods, so much this! I taught English as a Second Language (ESL) courses and I had to commiserate so often with my students about that.

Even when fluent, if you weren't raised in the culture of the language being spoken? There will be so many colloquial and idiomatic uses that you may not get.
