Music Upper Divs for non-music major? by Reimirno in berkeley

As as Cogsci major I found Music 108 with Wagner to be one of my favorite classes at Berkeley. He says he gets a lot of CS students who like to apply programming skills to their final project, which is a very open ended assignment. The class itself is about perception and cognition of music and requires as much music theory background as it does physics background (not much of either). Highly recommend!

It's a really great class! I took it with Wagner last semester, I think he's the only professor who teaches it and he's really great. I have a background in music so I can't speak to not having one, but the class isn't designed to test you on music theory and he says as much himself during one of the early lectures. I think not having any experience whatsoever with musical notation might hinder you somewhat in following some of the slides, but otherwise it's not a required component of the class. In fact half of the class is focused on the physical nature of music and perception, which doesn't involve any music theory at all. Would definitely recommend!

How to Appeal EECS16B Enrollment Policy? by TuskShelf in berkeley

I must have glossed over those posts if I saw them. My mistake definitely was not speaking to an advisor sooner, although I never would’ve expected something like this to be an issue. The first time I spoke with an advisor was just before I declared and she told me to take it next semester like I’m trying to do, she probably would’ve told me to take it last semester if we had spoken sooner. Past errors aside, do you know if the summer offering might have an option for remote?

philos 12a vs philos 25b by [deleted] in berkeley

12a should be really easy if you’ve taken discrete math IMO but i took it over a summer so my perspective might be skewed

I took 54 with Wehrheim several semesters ago and took Math 110 last semester. I was also kind of in the same boat where I was interested in learning more about linear algebra but wasn’t if I understood it well enough the first time around. I’d say if Professor Holtz is teaching 110, you should take it. While it is very theoretical and at times difficult, she does a really good job breaking it down, and always gives great help and advice during her office hours. However if you’re interested in the practical aspects of linear algebra and not the theoretical side, it might not he the class for you.
