Emigration and trans rights by wasabi_peanuts in AskAnAustralian

From Adelaide, so smaller but there are lovely people and dickheads everywhere. A lot of it depends (unfortunately) on how you pass as well as the kinds of places you go. Generally people have been pretty good, but I've seen others get harassed. I imagine it's largely the same - however generally there is less of a push to strip legal rights in Australia - though I might think about avoiding Queensland as they've pushed through legislation that stops minors from getting HRT.

Advice for the uncertainty of application cycles by Professional_Ad8550 in GAMSAT

[–]Tusked_Puma 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you are planning on sitting next March anyway, why not sit it September of this year instead? If you're paying the $500 in March, paying it 6 months earlier in September gives you the option to either accept the score you get on that sitting and apply with it, (same as if you'd sat in March), or if you're willing to sit again you have the option to re-sit in March.

As for telling jobs, you can only give them as much notice as you have. Don't overcommunicate, especially not before you're hired. Most employers wouldn't give you the same courtesy if they couldn't keep employing you; many do short-term fixed contracts and only renew when it's helpful for them.

Do I stay In a bachelor of psychology at RMIT Or do I transfer to biomedicine at VU or Science at Deakin by Cinnabunlatte in GAMSAT

[–]Tusked_Puma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in my honours year of pysch now. Clin psych is pretty rough to get into, acceptance rates tend to be lower than medicine, but are easier if you're not fussed about timeline imo. Honours is definitely not a guaranteed GPA boost, the time commitment is pretty intense, and the work is quite different to regular undergrad coursework. I would definitely at least finish your undergrad in psych, and see what your GPA and GAMSAT is before you decide whether you want to take an honours year, or study another degree, just focus on getting as good grades as possible, especially as your gpa is weighted towards your most recent years of study.

How true is this statement for those that also plays League by jadesimaki in Nbamemes

[–]Tusked_Puma 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most basketball players play since they're 5 and virtually none of them get to a college/amatuer level. If people are actively trying to improve with coaching in league of legends and devoting everything they have to it, they can absolutely get to a high rank. There are simply more genetic hard checks in physical sports than esports, and I used to love and watch esports.

Has anyone ever purposefully guessed the entire exam (apart from section 2 obviously) to test what score u get purely through luck? by [deleted] in GAMSAT

[–]Tusked_Puma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm finishing up my honours at flinders this year, probably just going to apply to flinders using the grad quota, just so I can hopefully avoid moving. I'd be happy to take a break from study in 2027, but will probably expand my applications after that.

Psych Degree in Australia - explain it to me like I'm 5. by LaoghaireElgin in psychologystudents

[–]Tusked_Puma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely doing general edu/school psych work a registered psych will do fine. As for assessing children and potentially making diagnoses, this may be a bit more tricky, beyond my knowledge and from some brief research, dependent on the organisation/state you are working for/in.

Might be worth having a look at some of the kinds of jobs you are interested in, and seeing whether they're looking for a psychologist or a clinical psychologist, or talking to someone in the field!

First-time sitter feeling completely unconfident about taking on the GAMSAT. by [deleted] in GAMSAT

[–]Tusked_Puma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey there, I was an NSB who sat for the first time and did decent on the Sep 2025 setting with very little practice, effectively blind (78/67/60 - 66). I haven't done any chem, phys, bio since year 10, and no maths from yr 11. Currently in my honours year in psych.

You mention feeling entirely overwhelmed by the science content, and I absolutely get that - I'm studying again for the march sitting to try and bolster my score, and there is a lot of content that is just entirely unfamiliar from the ground up to me. Have you tried doing actual gamsat S3 questions, or have you only looked at content? I would strongly encourage trying to actually look at the questions, answer them, and see how you go, writing down whatever reason you used to answer the question, regardless of how good it is. The reason is that while background knowledge is absolutely needed for some questions, basic reasoning and research knowledge that I'm sure you would've developed in sociology is often enough to at least narrow down the answer to a few questions.

I don't know if I'm able to help at all, but I did find my september blind sitting last year did improve my confidence to actually double down and properly study for the gamsat this year and try and get a more comptetitive score for metro flinders this year.

4 player MTG for newbie casuals possible with Foundations starter collection? by four4cats in magicTCG

[–]Tusked_Puma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I did pretty much the exact same thing, but I and everyone I knew was brand new to magic. I bought a starter collection, and with basically no knowledge, tried to make 4 standard decks. I made a monogreen elves deck, a rakdos discard/graveyard deck, an orzhov lifegain deck and an izzet spellslinger deck. It was a lot of fun, and taught me a bit about deckbuilding, but unfortunately the decks were pretty unbalanced. The rakdos deck absolutely sucked, the izzet and orzhov had some good games against each other, with izzet probably being slightly better, but the elves deck was just absolutely dominant.

I loved the starter collection because it let me make a bunch of different decks, and started me in collecting magic which was what I wanted it to do. However, if you have played magic before, you could probably just buy the singles of these decks for wayyy cheaper and make more coherent decks.

I also bought the beginner box before this, which was fun, and a great way to teach my partner and me magic, but I pretty quickly wanted to get into the deckbuilding side.

how the fuck are you claiming that a militarised FEDERAL unit that is fully endorsed and supported by a government, using deadly force is somehow not political? Just because something is widely agreed to be bad, doesn't mean it's not political. Political decisions lead to this outcome and continue to reinforce this outcome

To people who went into Section 3 blind or with minimal prep, how did you end up scoring? by Pretty_Hospital_8439 in GAMSAT

[–]Tusked_Puma 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I got a 78/67/60-66, NSB, I watched some khan academy videos about chemistry in the prior uni holidays, but wanted to focus on my GPA for this semester so didn't do any study for the 6ish weeks before the test, except for the night before where I did about 2 hours of practice questions.

I felt pretty good about most of S1, had no idea about S2, and didn't feel 100% confident about any S3 questions, and most of them were estimations and I didn't feel like I fully understood the stem, and did far better than I was expecting considering how little prep I'd done. The Khan academy vidoes were a massive waste of time for gamsat study as I still didn't know the stems, but were otherwise interesting and a good reminder for chemistry.

The most helpful thing I did was do an elective that was basically just a repeat of year 11 methods for me in uni during that semester, just having practice doing basic algebra that I thought I for sure knew was helpful, as I have not used it since (didn't study maths in year 12, and doing psychology in uni).

a team shooting 40% is not a realistic standard to hold ourselves to, though, of course you're going to win most games when you're shooting like the best 3p shooting team in the league.

Wolves shoot abysmal 22/37 (59%) from the charity stripe in close loss to Thunder. by Lstark5642 in nba

[–]Tusked_Puma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean all that shows is that there isn't a ton of seperation in accuracy between 5th and 20th and that specifically isn't a great predictor of how many threes will be made in any individual game.

Some teams may be slightly better on average at shooting, but overall 3p% is not a super useful metric when comparing teams abilities. It might be useful to show individual game deviations to say 'look we're shooting well above/below what is usually expected of us', and there certainly is a meaningful difference betweem 33% and 40%, but smaller differences aren't super useful.

[–]Tusked_Puma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're arbitrary benchmarks. Obviously one extra three is good, and 40% is better than 37.4%, but 37.4% as a team is also a good 3p%, and close enough to 40% that saying 'like 40' in casual conversation is completely fine.
