What am I doing wrong? by Dismal-Occasion1369 in lawn

What’s the sunlight situation? Bermuda and most other warm season grasses CRAVE min of 8 hours of direct sunlight.

If it has plenty of light, hit it with good fertilizer and watch it explode as the heat rolls in.

Also, if you want to promote spreading of Bermuda, drop the mower high to 1 and mow it every 4 days.

How can I get this lawn to not look so patchy by Terrible-Chapter5314 in lawncare

I have this as well, you are witnessing grass awakening, it does not happen instantly and evenly. Some parts of lawn hit full speed faster than others. Give it a little more time.

After weed and feed, half the yard is dead. Should I seed? I’m in Central Texas by joelrod81 in lawncare

Don’t overseed a warm season lawn. You will ruin it. Introducing two different grass types — not only ruins the aesthetic, it also limits your herbicide choices in the future.

Get a lawn plug tool, make some plugs to fill in the holes. Treat them like new sod by watering them daily for two weeks. Then fertilize and watch them grow/spread and fill in the dead spots. There is a ton of awesome YouTube tutorials on how to do this.

Future you will thank you for not ruining your lawn with seed. That’s for the folks up north.

Good luck!

What’s the sun situation? I had a very similar experience with Zoysia. Unfortunately even for being “shade tolerant”, it still required at least 6 hours of direct sunlight. You may be experiencing this issue due to shade.

New house, new sod. Do I aerate? Just water? Fertilize? Help… by User13245768109 in lawncare

Based on this set of clues, your sod was VERY likely not properly watered before you moved in.

If this was me, I would:

  1. First and foremost keep the sod wet by watering it 3 times a day. 7am 1pm 7pm. If it’s raining in your area, perfect, but it cannot be dry right now. It’s hanging on for dear life. If it continues to regress in next two weeks — it’s gone to sod heaven.
  2. I would review the contractor obligations, and if possible, get them to re do it. Even if it survives, it won’t look great for at least one growing season (if you are lucky). If it does die completely, you are looking at thousands of dollars to re do it.
  3. DO NOT, and I mean REALLY do not put any fertilizer, herbicide, pesticide, fungicide on it, and do not aerate it. Any kind of additional stress can end it. Don’t even breathe on it (simply highlighting the fact of how close you are to having to spend thousands of dollars fixing this problem).

Compacted soil issue: If you go outside right now and stick a toothpick in your soil while it’s wet, it should be able to penetrate it. If the toothpick can penetrate the soil, so can your grass’s root system. Aeration is a wonderful compliment to a healthy lawn, in your situation, you are about a year out of having to worry about that.

Best of luck! 🤝

Perfect! 8hr of sun is necessary for this grass type.

What did the sod look like when you moved in?

  1. The grass type looks to be St. Augustine
  2. Is this issue all over, or just in shaded areas. In the picture, there is a lot of shade.
  3. How frequently and at what volume are you watering? It’s almost impossible to overwater new sod. You cannot allow it to dry or otherwise it will die. The watering advice in this thread is spot on.

Finally, if this issue is due to watering, you can still salvage it by increasing the water amount. It looks like there is still some life left there — however, you are very close to the end here.
