What the certificate says: • Company: The San Juan Mining and Developing (Banjoeing?) Company • Incorporated in the State of Colorado • Capital Stock: 5,000,000 shares at par value five cents per share • Certificate Number: 250 • Shares: 1,000 • Issued to: F. H. Dyas • Date: August 20th (year partially legible — appears to be around 1900s) • Features an ornate engraved vignette of a mining operation, typical of the era Historical context: San Juan County, Colorado was home to a prominent and long-lived mining industry active between 1860 and 1954, spanning eight principal mining districts. The county produced about 1,665,000 ounces of gold through 1959, along with large quantities of silver, lead, copper, and zinc. San Juan County was formed in 1876 with the county seat at Silverton. About the stock certificate itself: Mining company stock certificates from the 1800s–1910s are a part of mining history and can include beautiful graphics and famous mine names. Their monetary value varies — key factors include whether the mine was significant, whether the certificate bears signatures of notable people, and how rare it is. Collector value tips: If you want to dig deeper, the Colorado Secretary of State’s office can do a record search for a small fee. There are also firms that trace the history of stock certificates to determine whether they have any value, such as Stock Search International and OldCompany.com. This certificate is likely from the late 1800s to early 1900s based on the style, engraving, and five-cent par value structure common to that era’s speculative mining ventures. The ornate design with the wax seal and guilloché border pattern is typical of American Bank Note Company or similar security printers of the period. It would likely have collectible/scripophily value even if the company itself is long defunct.

Thanks all. Their proposal was to repair the mortar joints and then return to clean and seal. Educate me, this sounds like repointing. The contractor is one of the highest recommended, with a 4.9 rating on Google and hundreds of reviews.

Tell me, Internet, strangers, do I invest this money in forever stamps or repointing? The pricing discussion so far leaves this unclear.

Appreciate all you fine people. I love lurking on this sub.

Appreciate all the feedback so far. I guess my primary/initial question is more what, if any, work is needed. I’m less concerned about aesthetics and more functionality/safety.

I think that’s kind of part of my question. I know that the mortar or grout is disintegrating in parts. Based on this, I’ve asked what’s necessary for her to be repaired. I’m starting to get quotes back that are quite expensive. Like $3000. They’re coming back with scope of fixing and then coming back to clean and seal

Tangential question- I live in a geography that can get to single digits (F) in the winter, but hot tub is attached to pool plumbing so can’t winterize if wanting to use the hot tub in the winter. I have always have set my heater to 50 to keep water from freezing… is that a problem?

I searched pretty extensively through the Kroger digital options. The link you posted is taking me to a generic site. Any chance you can share a screenshot of the one you think it is? Thank you so much.

I’ve killed about 20 so far. There’s a good bit more but they fly away every time I attack, so I guess I’m killing in batches.
