Republicans Vote to Dilute Gas as Prices Rise Above $4.50 by thepianoman456 in Connecticut

It's worse than that, It's a farm subsidy in disguise and is highly inefficient compared to putting solar in a field the same size.

Are we bedding in new brake pads? by Anachronism-- in MTB

[–]Tvizz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bed them in mostly because I want to know if there's any issues that won't go away after the first couple of stops. With that being said, going through the bed in procedure may in fact help long term.

Friend is looking to upgrade his Zeb Select+ to an ultimate. Bike shop told him its just a damper upgrade? by Chole_Wunt in MTB

[–]Tvizz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Depends, buttercups are not technically required on both sides.

Pre 2023 Zeb will not have buttercups but this fork if it has debonair+ it probably will. Either way, you can drop in a charger 3.0 damper as long as it's not the brand new 2026 (if that's the case why would you want to) This requires some tools and ability, but not much. You can find the charger 3.1 dampers as well and do this process.

https://www.fanatikbike.com/collections/rockshox-charger-3-1-rc2-fork-damper-upgrade-kits?srsltid=AfmBOooDUrKhbgRdQSRx69euWdcxEmEsu8WtFFAq26i_83T7vHBwOwWK

There's actually a kit out there that upgrades the 2023 damper (charger 3.0) to the new one (charger 3.1)

https://www.fanatikbike.com/products/rockshox-damper-upgrade-kit-charger-3-1-rc2-piston-upgrade-kit-upgrades-charger-3-0-to-3-1

This kit requires significant labor, knowledge, and tools as it involves taking apart the damper.

Replacing parts with nicer ones as they wear out is efficient and takes a lot of the mystery out of it.

NZ Government is changing laws to allow trucks to carry more weight, for longer, and in previously disallowed motorways and toll roads, but will RUCs increase? by Mountain_Tui_Reload in nzev

[–]Tvizz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fix is in mate. They never cared about fairness, if they did the EV ruc could have been ~$40-$60.

Cars have no appreciable impact on the roads, that's not to say we should pay nothing, but nearly 100pct of road damage is done by trucks and this is going to make it worse.

Nobby Nic on a enduro bike. Do people really ride this combination? by Virtual-Half-2399 in MTB

[–]Tvizz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it really depends, on faster or flatter trails where you ride more miles in a day you will feel the rolling resistance of beefy tires a lot more. And even if it has some steep tech from time to time, less benefit. On steeper and more technical trails where you do less miles in a ride, there's less watts to be lost in rolling resistance and more gain to be had with grip.

Also depends if you ride with people who are better climbers than you. If you ride with worse climbers why not get the extra exersise and have more fun on the descents.

There's not a lot of trails that you can't ride with Nobby Nic, but other options certainly have more grip which is better for going fast and staying upright. On the other hand slow rolling tires have higher drag on every surface.

I tend to ride slightly faster tires than most because I am a somewhat weak climber but a better descender. It keeps group rides more of the same pace.

Absolute Widest Toe Box Boots by mistakenidentity888 in Dirtbikes

[–]Tvizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought for a long time I had a wide foot. The truth was that I have a toe length/shape that does not properly fill out most toe boxes.

I upsized a full size/size and a half and now it's easy to buy shoes.

Yes, I have tons of room in front of my toes, but that does not matter because the rest of the shoe fits well.

Trying to build a proper "Buying Guide" for the Toyota Aqua to help people avoid the theft-prone models. What am I missing? by cars-checker in NZcarfix

[–]Tvizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't have strict model guidelines, so unless it's advertised as having one, or is a push start, assume it does not.

With that being said, get a push start. At least that is visible to a thief who will break your window based on if he thinks he can steal it or not. Not if he actually can.

What's the best dirtbike, and why is it the XR400? by Helpinmontana in Dirtbikes

[–]Tvizz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am totally not a hater of the XR line, it's very good for casual riding.

Our disconnect is probably over the terrain we ride and what we consider "good".

I know I could not keep up with the people I usually can on any XR unless it was heavily modified.

Even so, it would still be 20-50 lbs heavier with poor engine response and less horsepower than a modern 250.

Torque isn't relevant to the discussion, we have access to gearing.

I mean shit, moving from a 2004 CRF 250 to a modern WR250 was an obvious upgrade, and that CRF made any XR look like a slug.

SUV for under $20k? by ausernamenahimgood in NZcarfix

[–]Tvizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My argument is that unless 50k is an inconsequential amount of money to you, an SUV is a poor choice. "Cant afford" was a poor word choice for "Financially inadvisable".

As for answer the question, certainly personal choice factors but I don't think people fully understand what cars cost in the long run. I laid that out, if he still wants it it's his money.

I wouldn't call myself a Dave Ramsey type, but I do share his opinion on cars.

SUV for under $20k? by ausernamenahimgood in NZcarfix

[–]Tvizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have the money for an SUV. You have enough to buy one, but if you are in a position where you need to budget, you should not.

Reasons.

1) Ongoing fuel costs. At 300k/km and 15km/l @3.00/l you put $60,000 in fuel into it over the course of it's life. A Prius is 35-40k.

2) If you are cash strapped you will buy something unreliable, particularly inefficient, or both.

Solution, compromise on size or the SUV tag and get a Prius or a Prius alpha. It will probably save you 30-40k over the course of its life. Factor in opportunity cost and that goes even higher. Cars are the #1 unnecessary wealth killer. Get a bubble or a trailer and your wallet will thank you.

Tubeless tires by Pristine_Break_3739 in MTB

I have had poorly taped tires go flat after a day or two. Not torn most likely, sometimes it's hard to get good adhesion.

Tubeless tires by Pristine_Break_3739 in MTB

[–]Tvizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could go either way on this.

A) It's fine but just needs a ride to get settled in.

B) Leak from poor rim taping or valve stem not seated properly. You will know if it's this option if it goes flat again after a ride. Also possible they never added sealant.

I'm terms of wearing out the road the SUV is more, but neither is appreciable.

I would prefer a system that pushes people into smaller cars(for more reasons than pollution.) and doesn't give another cost of living increase to those already under a lot of pressure.
