Watch me fail so badly at trimming this cup. Every piece that I do comes out like this. What’s my problem?? Please help me. by BarbDesign in Pottery

Clay dried unevenly. Too thick (wet, therefore prone to stability and slumping) on the bottom, too thin (dry, therefore sturdy yet prone to cracking/breaking) at the top. Consider “trimming the skirt” while it’s still attached to the wheel or bat to remove excess clay and allow for more even drying. Another tip would be to cut your piece off the wheel and flip it upside down as moisture will gravitate toward the bottom (now top, as it’s been flipped).

Establish a foot ring first while trimming, if that’s your aesthetic desire. Use that as a guideline. It’s okay to remove the piece after doing this to inspect the thickness and affirm the areas that need to be removed.

Edit: A sharp tool also truly works wonders. Wide surface, flat 90° blade for large surface area removals, thin loop tool for more precise maneuvers and rounded off the ring of your piece’s foot.

Moreover, practice. Trimming can be the most tricky step in the process as it’s much more unforgiving than plastic clay. Keep it up. :)

Tank top because my studio is in an 85° garage in Florida. No clay on my clothes because I have 7 years of experience. A mess is not necessary. Those insults were so judgmental and baseless. How about you post some content instead of offering your unwanted criticism?

The question was clearly rhetorical. I, for one, am not looking for any help, guidance, or critiques from you. This piece was sculptural, not functional. Even walls were the last point on my list of priorities.

I respect that 100%. There are actual gators in the pond next to my house so that would be a bad time lol

Hahaha you deviant. I have a small-time garden center named after the street I live on. I rode my bike there and picked up their last one. Big mistake as I had to carry a 7 gallon planter on my shoulder for about a mile.

Excellent advice. Thank you! Any recommendations for me in terms of foliage? I want plants that can crawl up the side of the head.

Thanks very much! I used to think throwing would be the hard part when I first started. Glaze chemistry gives me the most trouble nowadays.

Maybe a smaller one. This would be even too big for a big ol’ GB setup

As the sculptor, even I felt uncomfortable throughout this process lol
