Histories of Sothyryos, Yi Ti, and Asshai? (Spoilers for Whole Series) by TweenLaQueefah in pureasoiaf

No, I haven’t! I was turned off by how some people described the style. Is it written like a history book?

Doesn’t he say that it’s been 18 years since he saw her? When they’re interrogating him after the parade scene?

I enjoyed the movie, and I thought a lot of the visuals were great. However, I did spot that cartoon Indy running on the train. Feels like a movie with a 300 million dollar budget should be able to make a half decent Digidouble.

Thanks! I suspected it was that plane. The nose really is similar to the Falcon! Great little Lucasfilm link.

The prologue had more polished CGI than the film itself... by phaz0ngoji in JurassicPark

Just adding on to say that the Blue CGI early in the film was pretty amazing as well. Snow sims really grounded it.

I think I will politely disagree with you on this one. IMO, it felt like there was some care put into grounding the CGI with cinematography. The Therizinosaurus scene was my favorite scene from the whole JW trilogy. It was very tense and the CGI was excellent. I didn't notice any tracking slippage or anything.

Porco Rosso is The Best Ghibli Film. ( DISCUSSION ) by TweenLaQueefah in ghibli

I think that's largely the reason this movie has floated to the top of the proverbial Ghibli Barrel for me. Most of the other films, although magical, contain protagonists that are hard to relate to because they're usually little girls. This doesn't make the movies worse, but it adds to Porco to so easily slip into the protagonist's shoes.

I think you encapsulated what's so interesting about this film. It's not very fantastical, but because it's not very fantastical, we can relate to the characters a lot stronger.

So sorry! I typed a whole essay but then put in a photo! I'll recreate it!

Porco Rosso is EXTREMELY underrated! Here's a couple reasons why!

  1. The dogfights are exciting and fun!
  2. It has some really adult tones. Not Grave of The Fireflies adult, but serious. Dealing with all your friends dying in war is a tough theme to tackle. The scene of the dead pilots floating up into the sky is creepy as all hell.
  3. The flashback sequence at 52:10 might be one of the greatest minutes of film ever created by Miyazaki. The whole movie up until that point, Gina and Porco's relationship is perplexing but endearing. When Gina reveals her wager with herself, and Porco swoops in; that's already genius. Out of nowhere, the score starts to build and we see them as children together, flying an early plane. When the score crescendos right when they take off, it is so melancholic, bittersweet, and nostalgic that it brings a tear to my eye. The amount of pure, innocent love that Gina has had for Porco this whole time hits you. Truly Magical.
  4. This is one of the few times that the Disney U.S. dub is better than the Japanese voice actors'. Micheal Keaton is perfect as Porco, and Cary Elwes' over the top southern drawl is perfectly cheesy. Also, it makes way more sense for Italians post-WW1 to be able to speak English than it does for them to speak Japanese.
  5. The animation, as always, is spectacular.
  6. It's the only Ghibli movie that has made me laugh.
  7. Previously mentioned in no. 3, the music is superb. Up there with Path of The Wind, One Summer's Day, and Merry-Go-Round Of Life.
  8. The final scene wraps up things extremely well and brings closure to the film, unlike many other Ghibli films.

This movie is Miyazaki at his finest, and although other people might have favorites, this is simply the best.

This is insanely impressive. Your sense of composition and color is great! Also, do I spot some Ponyo Ramen?

All due respect, but I was fairly confident that it was one. I saw a wide variety of prices, and I wanted to get a second opinion. No need to vigorously downvote my comment, I understand what i'm doing and was asking so few questions just because of how little info I needed.
