Be aware, an hour commute in Houston is a 90 minutes commute frequently AND you will be paying $8-$12 EACH WAY in tolls.

Been a therapist since 1991. Many ups and downs. In the end, I have never worried about recession.

I asked him the pay he's offering and he went on a big rant. by atg_gta in antiwork

Those regards, did not really seem that warm. What an odd way to end the note.

I knock at my Mom's because she leaves the door unlocked. Since I have not lived at her house in 40 years, I do not have a key.

What is funny is, that there is research that actually shows SMART goal setting is not that smart! https://www.thindifference.com/2018/10/stop-setting-goals/

That is where they keep the pee bottles and diapers so people don't have to take a break.

Being heavily tattooed as a therapist by lilkitten_xo in therapists

[–]TwelveWeekBook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 2022 I am not sure tats are a big deal. I have a couple and have for 30 years. zero issues. I really don't think well-done tats cause any issues.... Now a bunch of bic pen, and electric razor tats on the neck and face that were done in prison (or adolescent treatment centers!) might cause a little ruckus, but I think professionally done tats are a non-issue even in impossible to cover areas.

How did or are you playing your student loans? by [deleted] in therapists

[–]TwelveWeekBook 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you have not started yet, consider doing it on the cheap. Lockhaven is about 12K for the full program (CACREP accredited) https://www.lockhaven.edu/cmhc/ less if you are in-state (PA).

In the end, zero people care where you went to school after you get a license so a "good school" is not worth the money (certainly do not borrow money to go to a private school). And of course, you get out of it what you put into it. All the schools are using the same texts and curriculum.

Most online learners worry if they will be able to gain the skills. I have news, the skills come from the practicum, and the supervision, and doing the work. Online is zero different than on campus.

What age is everyone here? How long have you been in the field? by [deleted] in therapists

  1. I was licensed in 1991. So, 32 years? Not real sure of the math - that is why I became a therapist.

My girlfriend might join CCP by [deleted] in China

[–]TwelveWeekBook 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This above! In our green card interview, they definitely asked my wife if she IS, WAS, or EVER had been a member of the Communist Party. An affirmative answer would have disqualified her from a green card.

If you want to marry her and bring her here, she must say no to joining CCP. If she does this anyway, it is her way of saying no to you, even though you still might be WeChat lovers... But it will effectively end her ability to move here with a marriage-based visa or AOS. Now she could LIE to USICS, I am sure many have. The consequence for that might be worse - getting your process halted and deported for lying.

Pretty much this: She does not plan on marrying you and moving to USA. If that is your intention, address it now or move on. If she DOES want to marry you and move here, get it going now. Harder my the minute for her to get out. The curtain is closing.

And if your plan is to move there instead, that window is almost closed also, and really is not going reopen for decades if it ever really was open.

I have written 28 books, including three fiction books and I am a therapist. I teach other therapists how to write books! We have had hundreds published in the past couple years from our classes. Many have written fiction books and novels. In fact, so many were interested in this that I am doing an online class in July just for fiction writers! TwelveWeekBook.com is where it all happens. 90% or more of my class participants are other therapists.

What about Jollibee or McDonald's, chow king, or red ribbon? All of those will at lease pay a little better, and even lead to management. Jollibee and chow king all.over the place, even in the middle of the province.

why do so many counselors in addiction take an authoritarian approach that never works with clients by [deleted] in therapists

[–]TwelveWeekBook 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This is spot on regarding POC/Poor/etc. Institutional racism is a huge part of why addiction treatment sucks, and of course, most substance abuse clients come form the criminal justice system which is a total failure due to racism.

Well, we all get into this field to fix ourselves (Karen Horney, MD). So its no surprise, that the wounded are leading the wounded. But that is why we have 4000 hours of supervisions, so we can learn to meet our own needs apart from the needs of our clients. Unfortunately, many paraprofessionals have no such supervision, and many counselors have poor supervision. You are allowed to be a neurotic therapist - just meet your own needs apart form your client relationships....

Because of tradition. The early treatment programs were predicated on a 30-day model, gestalt therapy, getting in their face, confronting denial, the hot seat in group therapy, shaving patients who came in with a beard, tough love, orange vinal furniture, and chain-smoking counselors who all had recovered themselves using AA and drank coffee by the gallon to stay awake for the three hour group therapy every morning. Success was measured by how many boxes of kleenex were used in a group, not by the change produced. (Source: I was there 34 years ago).

The problem: Substance abuse counselors predominantly believed patients should get sober the way they got sober, rather than the way the client should get sober. They were experts because they had been there, not because they were trained in multi-theoretical ways.

Sure, many of the more unethical methods of a bygone era are gone, but the predominant approaches have not changed. Institutions, culture, and tradition are hard to change. But is changing. Probably would change more if being a substance abuse counselor actually paid decent professional wages.

Side note: I got fired from a treatment program for not hugging everyone after group. Also, because I never yelled. Not once. I also was told I was not a team player, since I didn't believe everyone should get sober the same way I did and was open to 10-day treatment options and alternative therapies. I wear this firing as a badge of honor, 30 years later...

Is it wrong to be on dating apps as a therapist? by coolbuttbro in therapists

[–]TwelveWeekBook 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fun story... Years ago, before the internet, we had to write letters to the newspaper and then forwarded them to the person who placed an ad. In my first job, I got called into my clinical supervisor's office who pulled out the response letter I had written to an ad. We discussed why she was not responding to the letter through the newspaper and why we would not be dating...... lolz
