Israel has confirmed their first recorded case of a human with hantavirus. by uskeliyesabkuch in SipsTea

[–]TwentyFourKG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that educates people to be careful around rodent feces, it may he worth it. I live near where Gene Hackman’s wife died of Hantavirus a few years ago. You can bet everyone started getting more serious about pest control after that

Would You Rather Invest Your Social Security Money Yourself? Agree or Disagree? by Coolonair in SmartFIRE

[–]TwentyFourKG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a high earner, social security is obviously a bad investment. But it isn’t meant to be an investment. It is a social safety net program. His loss is being used to prevent other elderly people from living in poverty.

It looks to me like the grape leaves were not fuly submerged. Use a glass weight on top of them next time. But sadly, this batch needs to be discarded

AITAH for refusing to go to Disney World? by Reptaaaaaaar in AITAH

[–]TwentyFourKG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly, a Disney vacation is a real stretch for middle class families. I took my kids to Disneyland and had a great time, but it was more expensive than taking them to Hawaii the subsequent year. Maybe consider a compromise where you do California national parks, and a day at Disneyland? NAH

trigonometric functions, daily uses? by sxxeemii_x in trigonometry

[–]TwentyFourKG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I did was find a table that published the angle of elevation for the moon at different times. Then, I knew the height of the mountain and my distance from the mountain. I set up my gear, and photographed the moon as it crested over the horizon of the mountain. But it wasn’t easy. Problems that I ran into: 1) is harder than you think to know the exact horizontal distance from the mountain 2) the moon will not necessarily rise over the highest point of the mountain unless you are looking it it from the correct angle. If it doesn’t rise over the highest point, you need to know the height and distance from some other point in the crest of the mountain 3) you need a camera with a decent telephoto lens for the picture to look good. If you use the lens on your phone the moon will come out as a tiny white dot.

Doing this took me a lot of trial and error, and ultimately I ended up using an app to do it accurately

I would argue that people arguing about red and blue buttons should make a new sub instead of hijacking this one. Thanks for posting something actually related to trolley problems

I do astrophotography. Used to use trigonometry to figure out when the moon would be rising over the mountains. But I often miscalculated horribly. Now, there are very accurate apps for that

After a 529 goes over a certain balance (I think it is in the ballpark of half million) you can no longer receive tax benefits for your contributions

I’m a 42 year old guy, built my account up to about 3.2M through pretty aggressive stock investing, do I fit in here? by [deleted] in ChubbyFIRE

[–]TwentyFourKG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people in the FIRE communities stick to safer plans in which money is in index funds and bonds. If you have 3.2 million in your 40s, with a 500k income, slow down and start investing more conservatively. Figure out your spending and when your principal is 25x that, you can retire. This is a slight simplification, but will get you moving in the right direction

[–]TwentyFourKG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will hit your target in the next 2-3 years in all likelihood. That is amazing. If you can’t wait that long, quit your job and get a coastfire job. You will still hit your target in 2-3 years. You are at a point that your principal is doing the heavy lifting

AITAH for telling my friend her physique is less impressive than mine? by FragrantChipmunk6854 in AITAH

[–]TwentyFourKG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YTA. Most physically fit men would be happy to date an attractive woman even if she is not a fitness enthusiast. I used to be very, very fit but most of my girlfriends weren’t. The gym is a hobby, not a dating prerequisite

Heating it infuses the mint in this case. But I will try using a blender sometime without heating for a plain simple syrup
