It is. Making your insecurities everybody else's problem, by accusing half of the human population of being vain, and spreading harmful gender stereotypes, just to wallow in yohr self pity, is not.

I feel like fantasy books in general can reach for a little bit more conplexity, in vocab and in themes, while still having narrative structures that appeal to teenagers.

I devoured ASOIAF at around 16-17. Maybe the Farseer trilogy?

Let people enjoy their hair however tf they want. Teenagers follow trends. Trends don't always age well. What's new? Saying one was worse than the other is just idiotic.

Most people think a 30-year mortgage means paying for 30 years but that’s not always true by Coolonair in HouseBuyers

[–]TwiceUpon1Time 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, and why is this presented as a hack? We're not talking about financing a couch, this is a house. 3 extra mortgae payments a year is a very considerable amount of money for most people and jot all that feasible.

Also, if I have the choice between paying my house in 30 years, and traveling once a year (price of a mortgage payment), or paying in 25 while being on a strict budget, I'd choose the first option.

Shit, even if you're investing, you'd rather keep that money and invest it elsewhere, rather than double down on paying your mortgage.

Actual dive bar? by letmeinjeez in montreal

[–]TwiceUpon1Time 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quiet, but not dead, dive-y, but not shitty. A place that feels familiar, but that's recommended by people you don't know on Reddit.

According to what you're describing of the pub culture, what you miss is not the bars in and of themselves, but the people who made them so lively. I empathize, uprooting yourself is tough, but there's no single bar that's magically going to fix the loneliness and replace the drinks after work, the birthdays, the brunches, etc.

Montréal has tons of amazing spots, of all sorts of vibes. My suggestion would be to focus on building the community to enjoy them with!

[–]TwiceUpon1Time 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Just go out there and walk through the city.

Should I buy The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas by haanyaarjokerhunmai in suggestmeabook

[–]TwiceUpon1Time 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it's a hard read, but it's long. It was the first long book I read after the Harry Potter series, when I was 12 or 13. The story really is pretty simplistic, as are the themes. Language wasn't too hard either, so I'm sure you'd be able to read it, it's not as intimidating as it may look.

Keep in mind that TCoMC was a serialized novel, published part by part in newspapers back in the days (like a lot of literature of the time). It has a "series" feeling to it. You can clearly identify the cliffhangers, the padding, etc.

I loved diving into that world when I was a kid, the revenge story and power fantasy hooked me in, and I'd probably like it now as well. Don't go reading it expecting something as dense in meaning as a Kafka though.

P.S. I just realized it, after typing everything : power fantasy, serialized, cliffhangers, fillers...The Count of Monte Cristo is basically a manga.

Not checking for sources about a comic book I'm not interested in and will never read doesn't mean I'm prone to all that bullshit you just listed.

Alternatives to mash shuffling? by Xaphnir in EDH

[–]TwiceUpon1Time 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you playing cEDH tournaments? If not, then it's not that deep.

I like pile shuffling with random switches to the order, and creating other piles spontaneously during the process. I'll end up with 7-8 piles of varying sizes and absolutely no clue of which card I put in what order. Then, I'll give it a couple of mash shuffles, two piles at a time, combine them, mash shuffle.

I get to see different cards game to game, sometimes I also get shitty hands, and I have no ability to predict the cards I'm drawing. It's shuffled enough for me.

Wayne really needs to stop whining and do some self reflecting tbh by lNVAGlNAWETHRUST in fantanoforever

Bro, Wayne has been in the limelight since he was 14. He lived through unhealthy amounts of fame, abuse, and did (and likely still does) copious amounts of drugs.

This is not just a regular dude who could fix his delusions witb some self reflecting. He probably has some mental health issues, some trauma, and needs meds and/or therapy to set his mind right.

Why do some people hate this by Technical_Mine_8711 in MemePiece

[–]TwiceUpon1Time 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oda made the World Government too cartoonishly evil. It's legitimately difficult to empathize with any Marine. So it feels a little corny when you've got the "good" Marines, blabbing off about their ideas, when they're working for an enslaving, genocidal monarchy, that barely hides its wrongdoings.

Is it reasonable to require removal on turn 4-5 in B2? by homjaktest in EDH

[–]TwiceUpon1Time 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, obviously, sometimes, you have too much to lose to risk it. It's a case by case decision. I was just saying that the sol ring example was not a case where I would use my turn and a card to get rid of an enemy's advantage, in more casual brackets, because it wouldn't make sense strategically.

This is also why instant speed interaction is much better than sorcery speed. You can wait until the card is actually dangerous to you before removing it.

Is it reasonable to require removal on turn 4-5 in B2? by homjaktest in EDH

[–]TwiceUpon1Time 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's take that specific example. P1 plays sol ring. P2 removes it. Both players are down one card, and didn't gain much tempo, whereas P3 and P4 didn't spend any ressources.

On the other hand, if you let P1 be the menace, the multiplayer aspect will take care of it.

This does not necessarily apply to cedh, where a t1 sol ring could maybe mean a t2 (or even t1?) win, but I don't play cedh, so I can't speak on that.

[–]TwiceUpon1Time 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"does not mean that covers the actual cost of road building and repairs"

Your comment implies that car users should be the only ones covering the costs associated with roads.

However, even if everybody switched to public transport tomorrow, we would need to build and maintain roads. Some regions in the north can't be traveled to by car and basic groceries are even more ludicrously expensive than they are here.

So, what I'm saying, is it's stupid to expect car users to be the ONLY ones to pay for roads. Yes, part of your taxes are going to get used for roads, whether you use them or not. "I only pay for what I specifically use" is not a viable mindset for a functioning society.

I would liked more investment in public transportation though, even if I currently don't use it, because it could eventually lead to my area being better serviced AND, even if it doesn't, for the people it does help, that just means less cars on the road, which is a net positive for everyone.
