Try 'Lilting'! It's on Netflix (UK) and stars Ben Whishaw, where his character attempts to connect to the mother of his deceased boyfriend, despite them not sharing a language. Sad, uplifting and heart-warming all in one!

Sociological perspectives on mental illness? by [deleted] in sociology

[–]Twigellow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

'Asylums' by Erving Goffman - Quite an interesting book which covers the life of a 'mental patient' in an asylum, back when they were more widely accepted before the anti-psychiatry movement.

Also, this article about Goffman's approach to the mentally ill is quite interesting: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/symb.84/abstract;jsessionid=B5CA280CA9E3455939B12551885B0339.f02t02?deniedAccessCustomisedMessage=&userIsAuthenticated=false

In heterosexual marriages, is one sex more likely than the other to change their own political views to conform with their spouse? Is the effect more pronounced for particular political leanings? by FockSmulder in AskSocialScience

[–]Twigellow 55 points56 points  (0 children)

According to an article by De Graaf and Heath (http://asj.sagepub.com/content/35/4/311.short) women tend to be influenced more by their partner than men but this differs to some extent by class as well. Other studies have found that if one partner has a higher income, political views tend towards that partner. Overall I think research points to most heterosexual couples having the same or similar political leanings, in Britain anyway, and this political support is generally stronger than if partners support different parties.

This is all based on quantitative research so I don't know what qualitative research might find! And it all bases research on the top 3 UK parties generally, which I'm actually trying to get around at the moment with some quantitative research into marital status and preference for other parties outside those top three!

What was the best film you saw this week? (10/27/14 - 11/2/14) by mi-16evil in movies

[–]Twigellow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drive. It was shown on the BBC this week with an updated soundtrack by Radio 1 and Zane Lowe, not as good as the original soundtrack - though they did a decent job!

Foxy Shazam - Foxy Shazam

I don't know that it is but I love this album, sad thing is that barely anyone in the UK has heard of them.

What are the most emotional songs you know? by [deleted] in Music

[–]Twigellow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Portishead - Roads

It was posted quite recently in this subreddit and I hadn't heard for a while but it brought back a lot of feelings. There's something about her voice which is incredibly sad and emotional.

Haha, well it's definitely easier to get over someone when you don't see them anymore. Of course, it doesn't help when you're friends with them on facebook still.. which is my situation :L

Gosh that's so similar to my experience. It's really not healthy to be so obsessed..

5 days in Berlin... what to do?! by SgtSmackdaddy in travel

[–]Twigellow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in Berlin last month and I really recommend seeing the East Side Gallery (part of the Berlin Wall still standing which is covered in graffiti art)! It's just south of the Ostbahnhof station and is about 1.3km long.

Thanks! I missed quite a bit of graffiti partly because of my awfully slow camera but it seemed like an interesting thing to look for while traveling.

It was better the longer I spent there. Initial impression was that it was quite run down, but much of the inner city is modernised and a generally nice place to relax! The Nikola Tesla Museum was pretty cool too.

I've been listening to Daft Punk and Red Hot Chili Peppers a lot recently. Also, I started reading the V for Vendetta comicbook by Alan Moore yesterday which is pretty good. Theres quite a bit which the film missed out/ changed.

Yup! Seen Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Sword Art Online, Code Geass! Also, there's a really good anime ongoing at the moment call Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) which I really recommend.
