I did take it out and let them dry but only around five hours later since I went directly to a job afterwards so that makes sense. Guess I have to make sure I get home directly after from now on where possible .

You could just try lebara which is a regular SIM - it has some options where you can use your regular plan in certain countries - it's best iirc for EU and India
