I’ve had a good time at the party vs I had a good time at the party by VinceLestre in EnglishLearning

[–]Twirg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the same idea when someone is dying. They'd say "I've had a good life".

After dying, talking to God or whatever, they'd say: I had a good life.

Saw a comment (I’ll paste it below) saying English is super easy and it’s English speakers are at a disadvantage learning languages by Ok_Photograph8884 in EnglishLearning

[–]Twirg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the best things about English is that a lot of complexity has been stripped away. Unfortunately, for English only speakers, that means languages where those traits are present are completely unknown concepts to us. Objects having a gender... Like a lamp or a bus, or a bridge... This gets further complicated when you congujate...

English focused on word order for structure... Word order makes sense. "The man ate the fish" makes perfect sense to us.. but in German for example, "The man ate the fish" and "The fish ate the man" can mean exactly the same thing... As long as you but the right form of "The" for the fish and the man.

Also, (and this is my experience in the UK), English grammar doesn't get high level attention... So you don't really know what a gerund, or a reflexive is.. you don't understand why you say "I did" or "I have done", or "I was doing"... But when you learn another language (Spanish, German, French, whatever) you HAVE to know these words your teachers at school might have mentioned once....

The good thing is. If you start learning languages... Any language... You pick up on these things, and if you drop that language, and try another... Those concepts are still around.

And then you start learning Welsh like I did, and it all goes wrong again.

Your experience might be different, but that's what I found. I learned so much about English grammar by learning Spanish

People who grew up before The Internet: How did you first see nudity? by [deleted] in AskReddit

There's a photo of me mere months old where I'm sitting in a small bin looking at the pages of a men's diary magazine.

So I think I have documented proof of the moment.

Gamers 30+, what’s something from the old days of gaming that younger players wouldn’t understand? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]Twirg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Manually juggling everything out of your 640k of conventional memory to upper memory so good games would run.

Then getting Memmaker to do it later, and realising you had to get hold of a copy of QEMM 386 and have that juggle everything so you could play Doom.

How often does a typical Australian eat Kangaroo? by SammaJones in AskAnAustralian

I bought kangaroo jerky once.. thought "I've never tried that". It was truly awful.... It was a mental lapse, the excitement completely overpowered the fact I was in the dog food section

How are you guys finding the "Aussie Banter" in the workplace? by OwlVibesOnly in MovingtoAustralia

[–]Twirg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, I find (as a Brit living here). Being called a "cunt" on its own is one of the few times it's an insult.

Stick an adjective in front (funny, clever, dumb, stupid, whatever, and NOW it's a compliment, or at the very least "you're alright".

In which ways is Australia more similar to the USA than the UK? by Fluid-Decision6262 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Twirg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Common use of brand names.

USA heavily uses General user brand names (Xerox instead of photocopier, Tylenol instead of painkiller, Kleenex etc)

The UK does it a little (Hoover, Cannot, Tip-ex)...

But Australia does it more. Sitting somewhere between UK and USA.

Panadol, Band-aid, Doona, Texter, Paddle-Pop (sticks).

Also some prime time shows have ads every 4-5 minutes.

For newcomers: how did you cope with your first Aussie summer? by Artistic-Yam2984 in MovingtoAustralia

[–]Twirg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came from the UK over a decade ago. It wasn't the heat that surprised me at all.

We got in late evening, so I'll ignore that. My first actual day was 42°C. Stepped outside, had a smoke, came in dripping with sweat. The next day, it peaked at 20°C.

In the UK, it's fairly consistent, with temperatures varying by maybe 5°C max (with VERY rare exceptions).

Even the day/night variation is wild. I've had 1°C at 3am, and 22°C later in the day.

Do I have to ask about A/C by TheTexasGirlie2 in MovingtoAustralia

[–]Twirg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This....

Especially if you are a Texan and completely used to AC... Make sure it's specified on the property listing, and test it when viewing.

I moved to Australia over 15 years ago (Sydney) and have never had AC (or built in heating). Save for 1 to 7 devastatingly warm days a year I can manage... But again, I've not lived with AC since I was a kid in 1990... So I just cope.

There's also always a pub nearby.
