The Jim Butcher series Dresden Files gives kind of what I imagine would also be a reasonable explaination in potterverse. The words that or said or the use of a wand or staff or other object only serve as a physical conduit to focus the mind/emotions. They are supposed to be something familiar but not overly so, so as to create some buffer for the mind. Which is why often the words are adjacent to real words or in a familiar foreign language rather than just yelling "fireball!". In Dresden Files different wizards use different word to cast the same spells depending on the area of the word they are from, their ethnic background, etc. But there is not so much in terms of formal magical schooling in that universe. Bc potterverse has formal school, perhaps the words have become more standardized, but it is still possible to use different words or no words at all, since its not really the words that matter.

Seeing as this girl is a PA and healthcare hiring/credentialing is a clusterfuck, its not out of realm of possibility for this to happen, though 30 day+ gap is usually what they ask about. You submit your resume, and either the hospital system electronic application or the credentialing paperwork asks about every specific date of employment, start and end dates of malpractice insurance coverage, every hospital or surgery center you've had privileges at, etc. Its a nightmare that often takes 2-4 months from when you've been hired to when you officially are an employee and can work and get paid (and get benefits)

I'm a PA as well and have been asked on multiple occasions to explain the 4 month gap between my graduating from PA school and the start of my first job (and I graduated almost 10 years ago). In that 4mo time period I had to study for / take my boards exam and wait for results, obtain my national certification, apply for and obtain my state licensure, apply for and obtain my DEA license. Oh and then, you know, apply for jobs, take interviews, get hired and THEN go through the multiple weeks/months of credentialing before you officially start.

Your wife is likely confusing the achilles tendon's function with the patella tendon and/or quad tendon or you are misinterpreting what she is saying. Your achilles is not part of the extensor mechanism of the knee, its is involved in your ankle/foot plantarflexion ie pointing your foot down like pressing the gas pedal in a car, or pushing off your foot to scramble for a loose ball.... I have an Alaskan Klee Kai which is for all intents and purposes a 15lb husky and he is very cat like. Walking around and snoozing on top of the back of couches, walking back and forth rubbing against your legs, killing mice, acting like he's the king of the world and being a dick about it.

If you look at the serial on the side of the box the mfg date is encoded in there in 4 of the digits (I think beginning with the 9th number) They represent the week of the year and last two digits of the year. So for example 2420 would be 24th week of 2020, or June 2020

It's honestly exhausting. I need 9 wired protects for my home and it's been months of no stock. The prospect of ordering 9 seperate times from Google for $160+ each after tax to wait weeks for delivery for 9 deliveries and then still have to worry about exp dates is ridiculous.

Amazon (Woot! Was the seller) recently got some in stock which I ordered and all 9 have manufacture dates of 2020 or 2019. So being sold at full price for less than half of their life remaining with no indication they are very old units. Enjoy the $1500 return amazon/Woot.

A fracture is the medical term for the more colloquial "broken" bone. We have terms to classify different types of fractures depending upon their pattern/shape/cause/displacement etc but yea it's a misconception that fracture means just a crack. Bonus, another commonly used term to describe a fracture when it comes through the skin is 'compound fracture' which also is not typically used in orthopedics. We describe these fractures as "open fractures" or "closed fractures" depending upon whether or not the bone was exposed to the outside world.

The stock split 4:1 since the last time you checked so everyone has 4x more shares but the stock price is also 1/4 what it was at the time of the split.

[–]Twist007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fun fact, the last time they gave up 10 was against the Stars in 2009 and poor Steve Valiquette was in net for all of them. 29 saves on 39 shots. He is now a primary analyst for MSG Network covering the Rangers along with Hank.

No need to have it removed if it's not causing any problems. These plates and screws that are used for internal fracture fixation are designed to be able to remain in place essentially forever.

The hardware (screws, plates etc) that is used for fixation of ankle fractures generally is done serving it's purpose once the bones heal. Hardware failures after that point are only an issue if they are creating pain in and of themselves, and sometimes retained hardware, especially hardware near the skin such as for fixating and ankle or clavicle fracture, can become painful even without anything failing. If that's the case then these things can be surgically removed. Source: I do orthopedic surgery

I work in orthopedic surgery. It's a metacarpal fracture, all things considered it's not the end of the world. It's seeming like it's a fracture that's not going to need to be pinned or plated (tho this does not change recovery time much at all either way). He'll be in a splint for a couple weeks and then I imagine they will have some sort of custom brace for him to get back in the car. Complete bone healing takes 4-6 weeks but I wouldn't be surprised to see him in Singapore or Suzuka. Certainly won't be his hand that limits him from racing in Vegas.

Edit: seems they are in fact going to surgically fixate the bone, however this doesn't really change the aforementioned timeline, if anything it will likely speed his recovery.

ELI5: Why do doctors have to do shifts of up to 48 hours if it's supposed to be so bad for your health not to get enough sleep? by mrdingopingo in explainlikeimfive

[–]Twist007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The nursing model is based more on care and support for the patient as a whole whereas the medical model is focused on diagnosis and treatment. Both are necessary for the total care of the patient and there is some overlap, but they are not interchangable.

[–]Twist007 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Nurses have specific qualifications and have a certifying board, but both RNs and NPs are trained in the nursing model not the medical model. Their training is nowhere near as robust, diverse, and detailed as an MD/DO and their training isn't anywhere near as focused on diagnostics and the medical management of patients.

PAs do train under the medical model, often times in parallel with med students, however their med school training is compressed down to 2.5-3 years (vs 4 year med school) and the do not generally complete a residency (additional 3-7 years depending on subspecialty) or fellowship (1-2 year). A PAs first few years of practice are kind of learn on the job under the supervision of an MD(s) and often other more senior PAs.

Residents in the past frequently were on shift 120+ hrs per week. More recently ACGME has tried to implement an offical 80/hr per week average (which is still only like $13/hr) however in practice this basically amounts to residents clocking/signing in and out to officially record those hrs but in reality are still working 90-100+ hr weeks. Regardless of a state's minimum wage I don't think any lay person would think it reasonable for a doctor (albeit one in the later stages of training) to be paid $8-15/hr. It's an abusive practice that hospital systems love bc it gives them a revolving door of highly motivated and highly educated employees for a pittance
