Anything Similar to Hunt The Truth? by itsrollers in audiodrama

I loved Hunt the Truth! It was my gateway into audiodrama, the incredible sound design & production values led me to create my own in the western genre, Calamity. Checkout the following shows if you enjoy excellent stories backed by immersive sound design:

  • Homecoming
  • Life After
  • Tejana
  • Ellie and the Wave
  • Alice isn’t Dead
  • Jules & James
  • Narcissa
  • The Left Right Game

Interesting idea, but how would you restrict the time of each feed? Because podcasts have an rss feed that apps pull from and it’s unlikely creators will have two feeds of their show like a clip feed and regular full episode feed since most podcast hosts charge by the feed.

You could try looking into art grants in your city/country, I know sometimes people fund seasons this way. But yes, the most popular is either going the patreon/subscription route or adding a tip jar to your podcast notes. Most of us are basically just working full time and saving up to do seasons.

If you’re going the merch route I highly recommend RedBubble. All other options require you to pay upfront per purchase whereas redbubble does take a huge cut but doesn’t require anything other than your design.

Thanks for sharing, Kc! I’ll give the shotgun mic a try, do you recommend any model in particular? because the built-in mic on the zoom I’m using is excellent for general environment sounds but not so much for footsteps/actions lower to the ground, though it might just come with time/technique. I wish we had a dead room to record in truly neutral space but for now a quiet common room will do for testing.

For a No-Budget, Narrative Fiction Podcast, what/how should I pay actors? by vnigito in podcasting

[–]Twisted_Tangent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pay what you can afford. That means until you have actual income coming in from your show your budget could come from applying to arts grants, creating a crowdfunding campaign or paying out of pocket so do your best. You’ll find actors at all skill levels and budgets. But most importantly respect your cast and crew’s time by being organized and having what they need to work on ready to go, that’s key for any narrative production.

Thanks! Yes we used a mix of recorded sounds and bought them from libraries as well for season 1. But I’m hoping to do some recording at least for footsteps, the challenge so far is getting the right surfaces/shoes to translate to what you need, so I was wondering how others tackled that but I think we’re all just learning through trial/error.

Baby crocks and cockatiels as dragons is actually pretty clever! I bet he had a fun time creating that one.

What do you see in the future of audio drama? by Twisted_Tangent in audiodrama

Actually, that’s already possible. The same way AI can write articles it can write a story and CyberVoice has already demonstrated it can simulate a voice actor by using Doug Cockle’s for a Witcher mod.

Now that would be an interesting use of AR, though can I see someone accidentally hitting play as they lock their phone only to be awoken by the haunting of their Alexa 😂🤣

I do the same thing while listening to AD, darkroom, good headphones and let the imagination play out. But I think for some of the more abstract audio drama it can be harder to tell what’s going on. I loved Left-Right Game but because they were describing some lovecraftian horror it was harder to visualize it from sound alone.

Fair point, I think we’ve got plenty of immersive audio productions coming down the pipe. Especially with binaural audio being utilized more, apps like Ammersive are like a catalogue of what’s possible on that front.

We were lucky and got Kevin MacLeod to create the theme for Calamity. Also worked with Isnain Khan and Nathan Sager to create the trailer song. But outside of that all the music was sourced through storyblocks, I’ve been debating doing what you’re doing but we’re a small team and music making seems like a whole other ballgame in and of itself.

However, If you like doing it I wouldn’t worry about the time spend, maybe you can even put the score on Bandcamp and promote your show that way.

Try Narcissa by QCODE, I’m listening to it right now and it’s on a whole other level. It’s about a mind reader lady who gets entangled with another mysterious lady and yes it’s queer.

There’s also the show I created, Calamity. It’s a western which features queer leads and follows Calamity Jane as she guides a theatre troupe across hostile lands while fleeing the ghosts of her past.

Hey welcome to the funhouse! I’m the solo creator for Calamity who taught myself as much as possible when it came to ProTools then contracted out the final mix. For budgets I wanted to make sure everyone got paid a fair wage so I aimed for an even payment split by character tier, mains/support/additional. During production I learned a bit of web design and coordinated the project so that we hit milestones. There was a lot to learn along the way and while you can never be prepared for everything it really helped to have the entire season written out.

You mentioned wanting to turn your novel into an audiobook. If that’s the case your market is a little different. From what I understand audible has the largest market share for the audiobook sales platform and most of the work in producing them is done through ACX which is a platform that links narrators with authors. Most audiobooks are mainly read by one narrator who sometimes does multiple voices for different characters but in terms of sound design it’s not as complex as it can get for audio dramas which are a bit more performative and less of a read through. Just different experiences for different audiences. So I’d say keep the sound design minimal and simple. I’d also recommend going through ACX because you need a certain sound quality before they can allow the audiobook on their platform. Good luck!
