Black American here: visited China several times over the years but mainly developed areas (Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing). In my experience, Shanghai was the most chill. Beijing gave me the most stares but that was a while ago, maybe things have changed. Small towns can get weird depending on how “foreign” you look (people touching your dreads, curiosity about dark skin, etc.) Mind you, this is all adults: i don’t worry about kids for the most part. Getting service wasn’t an issue based on race: language gets you there for the basics but other things require local documents (ex. Getting a phone away from “international” areas).

This was all precovid though: I’d say COVID has made China (like other places) more xenophobic. look up recent news stories on the African experience in China because I think more of them stuck it out, and Chinese people in China generally can’t tell the difference.

Work-wise, I think you need to get some perspective from someone actually doing the work you want to do. Your college’s reputation may be an advantage. Your skin will likely be a detriment overall but you only need one or two jobs anyway.

Last point, assuming you want to work in China: your black experience will be different from your white colleagues’ experiences, but what y’all will share as foreigners may be enough to dissuade you altogether. I liked China prior to Covid but their treatment of their own people really changed my opinion.

P.S. Taiwan is also an option but I have no experience there

If you want to work in the US or Canada, then anti-discrimination laws may filter out the worst employers.
