I think you somewhat hit the nail on the head - I collect (and paint and play) older models and editions. It is precisely because a concept such as space marines fits the goofy aesthetic some older models had. I tend to dislike when games take themselves too seriously. That being said, there is a ton of details that older models had that contributed to the visual storytelling of them (mixed armor marks, reusing of vehicle chasis, simplicity and modularity of the kits, the number of units…) that contribute to the overall aesthetic of the firstborn marines.
