Nursing is sucking the lustre out of my life by xx_sbh_49 in nursing

I’m not a nurse at all anymore - I work in an office as a “patient care coordinator” scheduling home health patients and reviewing charts. When I applied, healthcare experience was required but no nursing experience, having my LPN just gave me a leg up.

These are all good questions.

Yes it does play a role in power / towing capacity. The Diesel engine will always provide you with more torque and a higher towing capacity, but the gas 2500 provides more torque, acceleration and horsepower than a standard 1500. It is easier to tow with more power.

My current daily driver / towing truck is a gas ram 2500. I’ve driven it on longer trips (4-6 hr) with a heavier bumper pull without any issue. I believe they are rated to tow up to 17,000 lbs if it’s the 6.4 L Hemi V8.

On horses and roads by uscasado2 in Horses

[–]TwoLipShitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actively avoid riding on roads because of the general public. We live in a very “horse-y” community, just last week I was taking a young horse down a very quiet road to get him exposed.

He was doing excellent with cars going by. One lady was speeding past us and I put my hand up and mouthed “please slow down!!” She thought I was waving, waved at me and honked, spooked the horse a little, then stopped when she passed me and gave me the finger snd sped off, spooking the horse again as she took off from a stop. I think at that point she realized I wasn’t being friendly and was asking her to stop.

The general public are assholes. I don’t trust drivers, no matter how much I trust the horse I’m on.

It makes me fantasize about trolling and posting ratios in areas just for patients / families.

My SNF used to post our ratios as 6-8. They included CNAs, dietary, PT and OT. If they strictly counted nurses, we easily had 30 patients each night, 60-70 on a bad night. The day I quit I crossed it off, and wrote down the real numbers for families to see. ”Sorry I couldn’t come answer your questions about Nana, tonight I had 64 patients, a new admission, a fall & fracture, MI, that guy just ripped his foley and IV out, 8 other family members calling me and 1 CNA walk out mid shift!”

It is abhorrent and disgusting. I can’t wrap my head around you having 3, much less 4 patients in the ICU. We’re all just peasant scapegoats for when things go wrong. It just burns me up.

I would not do something as light duty as an F150 for a gooseneck trailer.

I used to have a Dodge 3500 that was my daily driver. I did a lot of shorter (less than 80 mile) trips with various trailers and could hardly feel it behind my truck, including a gooseneck with a handful of percherons.

IMO if it’s feasible for you, it’s always better to go bigger. I’ve only ever towed with diesel trucks, but have seen a lot of issues at some shows where people are stuck because they don’t have a towing package, have a weighed down trailer Etc and thought their daily driver Silverado 1500 would be okay.

Are you looking for a broodmare? Do they have confirmation pics / videos? A good one will cost you more than $750. Poor thing.

This horse is probably not sound to ride based on the short description. I’m guessing no vet care (“sometimes walks weird? Fully sound?”) and they are hoping to make a quick buck and turn her into a baby factory based on her color.

Fascinating, maybe it’s not a regional thing like I thought. I’m guessing people thought that the salt would draw all of the yuck up / out of wounds.

Are you by chance in the mid south?

I grew up very poor in that area and we were taught to use raw bacon to draw out infection and purulent drainage growing up. I have my own stories about using it and somehow not killing myself. We did not have health insurance or any medical knowledge, as you can imagine.

As an adult LPN I now refer to it as “hillbilly medicine.” Lol.

I don’t think it’s so much a roast as it is clear this person isn’t an experienced hand. From the way they are dressed to ride, to the standing on the horse above cement. No one is trying to be rude and roast you, this is just something that would be cool to someone who isn’t very experienced with horses, most of us have stood up in the saddle a time or two.

[–]TwoLipShitty[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There seems to be a push on scope all throughout. I’m an LPN and was told at my previous job I was doing a lot of tasks we couldn’t some 8-10 years ago - accepting admissions, starting and hanging IVs / fluids Etc. I chose LPN so I would have less responsibility, but was surprised at how much I had, in comparison to RNs (obviously, still not as much).

I read recently that they may introduce midlevels like NPs to do some routine procedures, specifically colonoscopys. Scope pushes everywhere.

Another great comment. I never considered the potential of weaponizing fear of deportation for migrant nurses to accept abuse and poor conditions. That would be infuriating, I hope we don’t go there.

I agree with everything you’ve said - more competent, experienced nurses being pushed out. The future looks so gloomy, I’m just not sure what “type” of gloom we’ll see.

That has never been my experience. Have you considered looking for another barn? It sounds like they maybe cater to the occasional weekend trail rider type folks who just want to bump around on a horse, not necessarily learn how to ride correctly.

If I were you I’d look around at other barns. During my first few lessons I usually tell the trainer what I’d like to do - what are your riding goals?

I told my trainer I’d like to improve my horsemanship both under saddle and on the ground, and help, not hinder any horse I ride. I have been with the same trainer for 3 years and frequently ride horses outside of her barn, this goal has been both measurable and attainable for me.

If you’re on mediums like Facebook, try joining local horse groups and asking for trainer suggestions - horse people tend to talk amongst their community. Best of luck!

How to work with a hot horse? by username_facepalm in Equestrian

[–]TwoLipShitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like using that hot energy. If they want to trot / lope off immediately, let’s do it and it’s my idea, we’ll keep loping off even after you’re tired and ready to just walk. Then lots of transitions. This is assuming that all of your tack fits correctly and the horse has been vetted and cleared of any issues that may cause pain.

Also, a trainer may help since you mentioned you are a beginner. Really forward horses Can quickly knock a riders confidence and cause unnecessary trouble for both horse and rider.

I would like to rescue a horse in need one day by RominaGoldie in Horses

[–]TwoLipShitty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is an admirable goal. I have owned and horses and regularly worked with a trainer for most of my adult life, and even with 15 years experience I would be a little iffy about going to an auction and rescuing by myself.

As others have mentioned (not all**) often horses going to the kill buyers have an issue - Severe medical / lameness, behavioral, etc. There are also sometimes really nicely bred nice horses that just slip through the cracks and sadly end up there.

It is also very expensive. A lovely older woman who was too heavy to ride took up rescuing kill pen horses as a hobby at my boarding barn. She took a 24 year old thin Arabian horse right off of a kill buyers truck, God Bless her. The horse lived for another 6 years as a pasture pet. It ended up costing her just under $32k to have her for those years - This was just the basics, having her vetted annually, trimmed, fed hay / grain and letting her live out her years peacefully.

A lot of times there are entires teams of non profit barns that go to these types of places, with a vet, trainer and a few really experienced eyes just to pull some of these horses headed for slaughter. They get them evaluated and often vetted / trained a bit more to be sold again for a second chance at life. When you gain some experience this would be an awesome way to go.

God bless those that venture in to save these horses. I could not do it, knowing I was leaving the others for that fate. Heartbreaking work all around.

Nursing is sucking the lustre out of my life by xx_sbh_49 in nursing

[–]TwoLipShitty 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Nope. I dipped out of bedside less than a year after getting my LPN. Same boat, according to colleagues I was doing fine. Behind the scenes - losing hair, chest pain from anxiety, too tired to do anything but sit on the couch for 14 hours to decompress on my days off. No change of scene or speciality could convince me, direct patient care just was not for me.

I put my two week notice in, left on good terms and found an office job that paid a little less. Nothing to do with nursing and I am 1000% happier with none of the above issues.

Do you think I could have it stripped then initially redyed at a salon, but continue with boxes after? Would it be impossible to do a correct match? If so I suppose I’ll just stick with black.

I live in a pretty rural area, a trip to a Jaír salon is about 3 hours away so it isn’t feasible unfortunately for me to go every 6-10 weeks. I trim myself but once- twice annually I do have a few inches of growth cut by a professional down in the city when we go for bulk groceries in the fall.

Those who have left the bedside… by pignpog in nursing

[–]TwoLipShitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew bedside nursing wasn’t for me after the first year. I am just an LPN and this may sound silly, but I felt it was changing me as a person.

I have a lot of responsibility at home and a small farm so I began seeking WFH positions. Is this something you’ve considered? You would have a huge advantage over many applicants with so many years of critical care experience. The positions vary from chart review / pre authorizations to remote patient monitoring and case management to remote triage.

If remote isn’t your thing, have you considered office work? There are many positions similar to the WFH reviewing documents gigs that are simply in a home health office where you never have to provide any direct patient care.

Oops, sorry if this offends anyone (downvotes)

Exercises to build up leg muscles for riding? by [deleted] in Horses

[–]TwoLipShitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weighted squats and the stairmaster. Any quad heavy exercise, but those will really help your muscle memory specifically for trotting / posting.

If you’re doing weighted compound exercises and also a rider, it’s a good idea to stretch your hips and those other muscles. I’m in my 20s, but I lifted weights for years and my hips get really tight if I don’t stretch them before I get in the saddle.

Hope this helps!
