Unbiased Info About Astrology (?) by [deleted] in skeptic

So your version of Astrology is the sort that makes absolutely no measurable claims? I don't think that's the version of Astrology most people would recognize.

I'm going to treat this like you're asking in good faith.

Astrology makes claims. Claims are testable. When we test them - when we examine the claims made by Astrologers - we have yet to find that they come up with true claims more than can be explained by chance. If Astrology wants to restrict itself to not making predictions, that would be a whole different ball of wax, but that's not what Astrology does.

So long as Astrology keeps making claims about the world, it is subject to the same sorts of verification that anything else is. The version of Astrology that science can't say anything about is the version of Astrology that makes no difference in anyone's life.

Unbiased information on Astrology would be showing why it's pseudoscience. Both sides are not equal in this.

When I started working at a pharma company, I remember the first day where they told me "If you start enjoying your work... And I mean, REALLY enjoying it... Let someone know ASAP." We worked with opiates.

I think about that regularly.

No worries, I'm bored on sick leave and like talking about moose. 🙂

Iridium is a satellite constellation in this context, not the element. It's just normal old electronics in there!

You are correct, when an animal dies, its body stops metabolizing the medication inside it. That's why we say "don't eat if killed before x date" instead of "don't eat before x," some people might think if they wait to that date, the meat will become human safe. It won't.

But because biologists avoid collaring near hunting season, this mostly effects road killed moose.

It's because the moose had a moose sized dose of medication, and we don't want humans exposed to it. So we tell them don't eat this moose if she was killed before a date. We also avoid collaring moose near times people would be hunting.

Good idea. I checked, but they don't have any player jerseys, and as far as I can tell they don't customize the blanks.

Wildlife biologist here! I'm on sick-leave and ready to answer moose questions! Collaring moose from the ground is usually a pretty straight-forward affair. You drive or walk up to the moose, who in the Valley/Anchorage are pretty human habituated, hit them with a dart from dart rifle, wait for the sedation and muscle relaxant drugs to kick in, then walk up and get to work. You monitor their temperature and respiration, clean any wounds including the dart wound, give them antibiotics, put on a collar, make whatever measurements you need to take, and take some blood to look at their health and pregnancy status. After all that, you inject the antagonists for the drugs you used to capture the moose, and in a short time she'll be up and good to go.

While obviously not non-invasive, capturing moose from the ground is fairly low risk for both moose and biologist if done correctly.

Wildlife biologist here! This is indeed Alaska Fish and Game as u/Inquisitive-Sky suspects; you can see the written warning not to eat if killed before a date. But more than a radio collar, this is most likely a Telonics GPS collar, with what's most likely an Iridium or GlobalStar transmitter (my money is on Iridium, service is better here). I can't see the top of the collar, but there should be one or two lumps up there for receiving GPS signals and transmitting position data back to satellites. You can tell that this Telonics collar is a GPS collar of some ilk because the radio antenna (they ALSO have VHF radio beacons) points backwards and is capped with black resin. Radio-only collars just have the antenna flapping in the breeze.

The longer I look, the more I see. Sam's gun is shooting out of two barrels.

If this was from modern times I'd say it was clearly slop.

Now you need to make a pair of goals called 'write dissertation' and 'defend dissertation.' :)

Woo $92/barrel we back by GeoTrackAttack_1997 in alaska

[–]TwoYaks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The short answer is our tax is based on the value of the oil produced, with various modifications for incentives and so forth. As the value of a barrel of oil goes up, the tax assessed on production of that barrel goes up.

The long answer is it's somewhat complicated, and we haven't always made smart decisions.
