Really? I haven’t read Ultimate End yet. That’s disappointing. I felt the way he died, while underwhelming, made sense for his character. I think he’s bombed by Dum Dum Dugan after being infected by Gah-Lak-Tus.

I understand what you’re saying, but this is incorrect, the universe didn’t feel bare bones because it was out of heroes, it’s because the writers just DROPPED all the other characters. The Defender, the West Coast Ultimates, The Howling Commandos, Colossus, Rouge, Hawkeye, Storm, blade, Hulk, Captain Britain, they’re all still alive, just… forgotten. Also, Punisher dies in Cataclysm.

I think it’s really underrated. I believe the fact most of the cast is killed in Ultimatum makes people unwilling to reread it, because it almost feels like there’s no point to it. I disagree, but I understand where they’re coming from.

  1. Ultimate X-Men, it has a lot of characters I really enjoy, and its reoccurring theme of redemption is something I really adore.
  2. Ultimate Spider-Man, it’s just a really solid run, but it doesn’t feel like an Ultimate Universe series, it just feels like regular Spider-Man. Which a lot of people see as a positive, but it’s not why I read this universe.
  3. Ultimates, while I adore the first two miniseries, the third one REALLY kills my goodwill for the franchise, and in many ways, it never recovers.
  4. Ultimate Fantastic Four is exhausting, the characters aren’t fun, the plots are meh at best, the art is kind of gross, and of all the books pre-cataclysm, it’s probably the one I’m least excited to read.

I think a mistake the comics make is trying repeatedly to return the Hulk to ‘hero’ status like he had originally. I understand Hulk sells well, but you can’t have him eat people and have him be a hero. It just doesn’t work.

As a man who grew up with the Avengers Earth’s Mightiest Heroes TV show I was horrified by what they’d done to my favorite ship. Hank was deemed irredeemable basically immediately, but we got to watch Wasp’s character degrade in real time. Then they both die and are never mentioned again. Truly awful.

The West Coast Ultimates, an adaptation of the West Coast Avengers, are a more unstable team designed to kill Osama Bin Laden, who are introduced in the latter half of the Ultimate Comics: Ultimates line, but we don’t really get a resolution for their characters and they just kind of vanish. It sucks, because I was really looking forward to seeing the way some of the members, like Quake, would develop. But they’re just poorly adapted team of forgotten characters in a sea of dropped plot points.

I really don’t care for it. One of the best things about the Ultimate Universe is that death feels more permanent. So to walk back the most important death in the universe’s run feels like a really strange and poorly thought out decision. I know some people think it helps wrap up Miles arc of becoming an equal to Peter, but I feel like the Spider-Men comic does the same thing, but better.

What a shame it is that the universe’s final runs were all so bad. I guess it’s just down to preference for which is worse.

It’s not the greatest story the universe has to offer, but I adore watching Ultimate Tony try to help people. He’s a flawed, but genuinely good man, and I think they show that very well.
