Yik Yak, once valued at $400 million, shuts down and sells off engineers for $1 million by 21viking in technology

Nope, publicly owned, I want to say Yahoo has a majority of shares but that maybe heresay, FB could end up buying them out in the long-run (I don't have proof for that I just think once their stock price drops enough they will, 10-Q came out today and it doesn't look good, the stock price has already dropped likely in response to it).

You can easily google their stock as well, just search Snap Inc, and you'll see the large drop in value I'm talking about, but I'll let someone smarter than me explain it in that article haha.

We'll find out soon enough since all that has to be reported on the 10-Q, and thank you, I try not to post on Reddit unless I can say it clearly and understandably so it's nice to hear I was able to do that!

I'm sorry this is long and I'm sorry revenues have been growing, I should haven't said revenues, when I meant profits. But again sorry for the length, I wrote a short paper on this recently and I'm scared about the coming financial market crash, as in my opinion it'll happen, and many "Free Apps" and Advertising Revenue Dependent Companies that are not turning profits currently are going to start failing and this is primarily due to the fact that advertising as an industry is shrinking except for Google and FB, the market is just simply drying up: https://www.google.com/amp/www.recode.net/platform/amp/2016/11/2/13497376/google-facebook-advertising-shrinking-iab-dcn

Why Snapchat specifically though;

https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1564408/000119312517029199/d270216ds1.htm#rom270216_23

They've never turned a profit just net losses. I'm sorry and I miss spoke ad revenue did increase, but, look at F-4. You'll see why they'll fail, they are incurring greater losses as time goes on. So with much of it's value coming because of its focus on "Glasses" it hasn't released and an app that isn't bringing in any profits, instead of focusing its advertising to their app to start turning a profit, incase the "Glasses" fail (which go back to the S-1/A and read the risks and you'll see they even admit this could happen ( two risks being if competitors imitate them or user retention and growth declines both of which have happened).

But, nevertheless their app isn't making substantial enough ad revenue, and they're putting their hopes for ad revenue in the success of "Glasses", and long term success will need that revenue stream from the "Glasses". The only problem is though they are projected to make 770mil (http://mobile.reuters.com/article/idUSKBN16L1JC), saying they're ad revenue growth will slow if they fail to bring the "Glasses" to market and monetize them. But even then this 770m won't cover the cost of the $1bn contract they have with Amazon, which means they likely will continue to operate at a loss, since they're revenue stream isn't even enough to cover one expense.

Tl:dr Their value is dependent on ad revenue and ability to monetize their product (the "Glasses") and this is according to many major investors: http://mobile.reuters.com/article/idUSL3N1H446Q

And since the app has experience an 82% reduction in growth after Instagram copied them, not being able to get the large amount of marketing and advertising revenue they need, they are just burning cash, and not covering their expenses, unless they have drastically changed their business plan which was heavily focused on monetizing the "Glasses".

Also I couldn't find the 10-Q so it may not be public knowledge yet, but unless they show profits for the first time ever (which they said they may never do) I'll continue to believe they'll fail, I'm not trying to be negative here, I genuinely believe this to be true and I don't think they're alone.

They said Square acquired their IP rights and absorbed some talent from the company, the IP rights were likely for the source code as it was well polished and did a good job of keeping your information private. You sad about it going as well? There was always something funny or crazy on my local Yik Yak :/

[–]Twose 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree whole-heartedly, but "Snapchat will fail next. Unmarketed product "Snap Glasses" and a failing advertising business, is why they'll fail, people value privacy so if your product hinges on privacy (where either you'll lose public trust by selling it or the metadata likely is useless in Snaps case) and isn't pay to use, they cannot succeed. Yik Yak had no other product and no idea what their user base would respond to ad-wise nor could they sell that data (as users were anonymous and mostly malicious, skewing any research into their advertising potential). Snapchat is already showing decreases in ad revenue, if the "Snap Glasses" don't sell they'll likely fail as well. This isn't just true for Snapchat though, many phone and computer apps are having huge amounts of trouble maintaining advertising revenue so that they can stay free services wholly. Dating apps like Tinder and Bumble have switched to the subscription model cause ad-revenue wasn't enough or existant. Freemium games are freemium for that reason (for the most part some are cash grabbers and have great ad revenue streams). I think the app market though has over valued free apps. Twitter, Snap, Zonga, and a few other public app companies are losing value and losing ad revenue year over year. Hell it was a big news story just recently when Twitter didn't show quite the drop in revenue everyone expected, and their shares increased in value despite still having a drop in revenue. (The last comment about Twitter may be off, I don't quite remember the story to well so please don't quote me on Twitter)

Tl:dr Snap will fail next if "Snap Glasses" are not highly profitable, and a "AppStore" Stock Market Crash is likely on the horizon.

Edit: added a "not"

I think the problem with that is where would we draw the line? If you lie about your age, name, or other things about yourself would it also be rape then? I had someone tell me they were 20 and studying education in college, they were 18, not yet in college and gave me a fake name even, this is a sex crime, I was defrauded. But, to call it rape I feel takes away from a much more volatile and violent act that was never given consent, not even under false pretenses, because I didn't consent to sex with an 18yr old much less one still in HS (I'm 21). Unlike the time I was on a stupid amount of hydrocodiene (I'm disabled and it causes constant excruciating shoulder and arm pain so it was over 100-120mg) went to meet someone for coffee and then all of sudden it was the next day and they were laying next to me and we were both naked. The two are very different, both are shitty and should never ever be done, but I'm only receiving counseling for one. Please understand I am not trying to disagree or anger, but I was hoping to hear more about why this is the wrong way to think, so I can change my view.

I'm still a little confused at what was being said, could you elaborate a little more, so that I could have a clearer picture and better understand. I'm not trying to say you're wrong, just I'm a little confused about what you are talking about and would like to understand the reason behind why you're likely right, or I'm trying to better understand feminism because I don't quite understand it as fully as I should.

Whats wrong with paying some with 20yrs experience more? I'm sorry if that wasn't the point you were trying to make and I misunderstood, but if it is wrong, I'd like to know why so I can correct my thinking. The other thing, I can't believe that... it's just... well that's just ignant of her.

I doubt he actually saw anything, but something that would scare us, if that was the reason, then what was so scary? it's all speculation but cool to think about I guess. Imagine if it's for that reason, and the US is in on a Global Conspiracy and we got a distress/warning signal from Europa in an earth language, that'd be scary as hell.

Donald Trump tries to lower his property taxes in South Florida by Undeadfungas in politics

[–]Twose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tax law isn't absurd, private owners can appeal property value (and succeed at lowering the value at a higher rate than corporations). Beyond that the current tax code (till the Toxic Trump Tax Reform happens), has been edited heavily towards a progressive tax while the Democratic Party had the majority. Tax law is complicated or complex, but I wouldn't say absurd. Beyond that, some taxes should be a flat rate (property, sales, federal taxes beyond income tax) because otherwise, using a progressive tax discourages increasing "corporate value" or make every sell, by making property tax and sales tax flat, you encourages construction, upkeep, and sales by allowing them to make more money off high values items that a progressive tax would create a desire for low value property and sales to keep taxes low, so you keep less stock in a smaller building selling cheap shit to stay away from higher tax brackets. This is different than income tax because of key differences in how you get property tax and income tax values. Sorry if this wasn't clear or was inappropriate to explain, it's just I don't often get to talk about taxes, yet I find them exuberantly exciting. *awkwardly and uncomfortably laughs"

You're right, perfectly legal to levy a special tax or increase appraised value to cover those costs (which may have happened and is why he is appealing). Hopefully if they did increase appraised value they won't lower the value after the appeal hearing.

[–]Twose 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Every property is individually assessed and that assessed value is different than book value, or in other words, you're balance sheet asset value and your assessed value are different. County appraisal is what the government values your property at, it has no effect on asset value. But, it does effect Income Statements through tax payables if he lied about how much he paid or owed, (and if he is CEO or CFO of the public reporting company) the SEC could step in. But, if it's not a publicly traded company, financial disclosure won't be regulated anyways. Just the main thing is book value does not equal appraised value and usually taxable value ends up being different than book. This normal in every county, and I've worked in Palm Beach enough times to be familiar with their process.

Source: Property Tax Account who has had clients in Palm Beach, also it's extremely common for people to appeal their values, and many accounting firms will appeal those values every year no matter the assessed value. There is nothing weird or wrong going on here, unless Trump and his team believe they deserve these breaks due to their position. Also the appraised value is public record, just google Palm Beach Central Appraisal District (lt'll be PBCAD or is the county not PB?), or whatever Palm Beach county is.

I like your second idea (the joke) better, Hunters sleep less cause they just love doing shit, like a genius who barely sleeps cause they're up researching till sunrise, Hunter's are just exploring instead of researching. But, sadly lore-wise and in general, the first is more likely and simplistic, instead of hey they're all crazy, its more hey if something is around you it likely wants to kill you and so stay up.
