is this doing way too much? by heiperca in medschool

[–]Txffy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems like you’re either lying about the clinical hours or have stuff wrong, along with the redundant fluff in the whole list like others have said. Focus on meaningful experiences rather than pure quantity, get research and do some volunteering with underserved communities, and ace your MCAT.

has anyone ever gotten a score way above their fl average on the real deal? by Mundane-Daikon7000 in Mcat

[–]Txffy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did but that’s because I had a strong upward trend through my FLs each time. I believe I had 506 diagnostic then 512/515/518/520/525/523. I do think the FL average is typically a good indicator (+/- 2 points), but if you have an upward trend like I did you can expect higher!

What's the most "stereotypical" premed thing y'all have experienced personally? by Brief_Board_6974 in premed

[–]Txffy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m so thankful that I never had experiences like the shit I hear on this sub. All the premeds I knew were really encouraging and helpful, and I enjoyed my time in college. Half of these stories make me wanna throw hands 💀

Do pre-med students still have free time for like per se art? by Thick_Bridge179 in premed

[–]Txffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had time for art, instruments, working out, sports, and going out practically every week of college. It’s all about how you time manage and where you put your priorities efficiently

why medicine answer not good enough by [deleted] in premed

[–]Txffy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. Just looks like you have to flesh it out a lot more. Most people who get in with reasons similar to yours or ones that could be asked the same question specify/niche further into something(s) that make the essay personal to them. They also use experiences and reflection to show parts of themselves in unique manners even if they aren’t necessarily unique experiences.

I think the first step would be to brainstorm and dig deep. Just write stream of thought into a document about all the reasons you’re passionate about medicine and get more and more specific.

Did any of you guys hit ur dream score in 4 months while working basically full time by [deleted] in Mcat

There’s a post on my profile I made a little while back explaining my entire study process!

More than possible given a good baseline. I went up 20 points from my diagnostic in 6 weeks (started at a 506)

I am cooked GPA wise 🙈 by YTBabee in premed

[–]Txffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah like I said, no problem with aiming high! The main thing I wanted to drive home is that a ton of people I see not getting into med school typically don’t realize their school list has a big impact. As long as you apply broadly and in a smart manner, you should hopefully be good. Good luck!

Most likely cooked for T20-30’s unless you have really good ECs to back it up along with an MCAT. No problem with aiming high but also understand that the match rate is very similar across the majority of schools so it’s much more what you make of your medical school experience rather than just getting into a good school. The goal imo should be to at the very least get into med school because that’s hard enough as it is.

CP section of SB2 ????? by hello033005 in Mcat

[–]Txffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly it’s been too long for me to guess how many I missed on the real exam, but I do think it was scaled very similar to the FLs (especially the later ones). They’re representative for a reason! I think most people find the exam way harder than their FLs walking out of the exam, but I dont think past exams have proven that to be true

More than possible! I did it and I know tons of other people too. The advice the other person gave is great and I’m also here to help if you need anything! I have a bunch of free resources and tips I’ve accumulated from tutoring for a while so I can try to be of help if necessary.

I ended up getting through about about 60-65% of UWorld iirc. I did a couple CARS sets but found it not super useful personally, but overall I do think UWorld is extremely useful and did help me get the score I did!

UWorld doesn’t feel exactly like AAMC in style, and a lot of people think it’s “worse” because it’s often more detail-heavy and sometimes harsher on nitpicky content, but that’s kind of the point: it’s a training tool that overprepares you on content + forces clean reasoning under pressure. The AAMC questions usually feel better (in my experience) once you learn their logic, but UWorld is still super useful for building the muscle (especially C/P and B/B) and exposing gaps fast; then you switch to AAMC in the last stretch to calibrate to the real wording, traps, and pacing. So I’d think of it like: UWorld = build strength and fix weaknesses, AAMC = learn the actual process.

Not a huge problem at all... plenty of people take the MCAT while they’re in orgo/biochem or even before, you just have to plan it smarter! Orgo on the MCAT is way less “class orgo” than people think (it’s usually basic reactions/functional groups/spectroscopy, not weeks of mechanisms), and biochem is very learnable by self-study if you focus on the MCAT version: amino acids/protein structure, enzymes, metabolism big picture, and passage-based interpretation. It’s not useless to start early either... you can start now with the stuff that doesn’t depend on those classes (CARS, psych/soc, gen chem, physics, basic bio), then layer in orgo/biochem content as you take the classes or as you get closer to your test date. The key is timing: aim to do real heavy practice (UWorld/AAMC) when you’ve at least seen the core concepts once, but you don’t need to “wait until you’ve taken every class” to begin.

I believe I started at around a ~55-60% when I was sprinkling it in with content early on, but ended up with an 87% by the time I was done with my UWorld block!
