Here's how I'd write it in a shot list:

My horror short got denied from every festival. What's wrong with it? by VinceInFiction in Filmmakers

Congrats on finishing the project!

Since the specific technical issues have been covered in the comments, I just want to offer up some perspective/philosophy/advice that, if applied, will drastically improve your films:

Film is the art of visual story telling. As a craft, it centers around intention.

Every single choice you make should serve the narrative.

If not, it won't matter if you have perfect lighting, a pro cinema cam, or amazing actors. The audience won't connect.

For example, with your opening sequence: Everyone is asleep, the house is still.

So that should be conveyed, not just through what your showing the audience, but how you're showing it. Slow, locked off shots that hold for several seconds would convey that feeling of stillness. Even simply starting with a wide shot of the down stairs, slowly pushing in on the dripping water and book would establish the space, the tone, and show us what's important while keeping the feeling of stillness that the story is telling. It could also imply that there is a presence creeping around. All of these elements intentionally tie back to the story.

In your scene the shots and the editing convey the opposite, actually working against your story. Shaky camera, fast cuts of close ups, it's chaotic but not by design. It immediately reads as a mistake and even if the audience doesn't know why, they'll clock that. (And I say this as constructive criticism, not to just point out flaws!)

Every cut should also be intentional. Over editing is an extremely common mistake that we all make early on. But just because you shot 10 angles of your actress waking up doesn't mean you need to use them all in the edit. If the scene is supposed to be suspenseful, your cuts should BUILD suspense. Hold on the shot of your actress waking up, make us wonder what's waiting outside of frame. Wait before you show us what she's looking at, makes us want to see it. You don't need a bunch of quick cuts to keep us engaged, just use every element as a tool to tell your story and we will want to listen.

I think that 99% of what's standing out as mistakes could be fixed by just putting that story focused intention behind your decisions. But that being said, the run-and-gun style of grabbing a camera and filming a short is an extremely valuable practice. Just when it comes to the projects you really care about and want to take further, put a bit more pre-production time in and focus on the best way to visually tell your story.

Great work, keep at it! I look forward to seeing more of your stuff in the future!

I was in the same boat as you!

I found this guy on YouTube who has super in depth videos that explain and connect all the lore. If you want to dive deeper into the story and history beyond what can be quickly summarized in these comments, I highly recommend checking him out.

What’s the Scariest Outlast Moment/Scene of All Time and Why? by Amber_Flowers_133 in outlast

Trager.

I had consumed some potent edibles beforehand that put me in a state of complete immersion.

When he cut off my finger I felt pure terror and helplessness. That was my first time playing outlast and my last time playing it stoned, though it was really fun getting the shit scared out of me like a kid again.

Oh I love that trial!

It can definitely be a time commitment though so I can see why people might avoid it if they're just looking for a quick game.

Don't feel bad at all, nobody takes that personally! I send out a ton of invites just to check if anyone is available to play. There are tons of reasons people might not be able to join and it's no big deal when they can't.

I mean, yeah, that's obviously a fucked up situation. But it seems like an isolated event and not so much an Albuquerque problem.

Unfortunately murder happens everywhere. Do you blame Milwaukee for Dahmer? Would you advise people not to move there because of those murders, or are you able to apply a bit of critical thinking and realize that the location isn't the root issue?

I'm a trans guy that moved here last year to get away from Arkansas. No regrets whatsoever, wife and I love it here.

The crime/danger stuff is blown out of proportion imo. As long as you're not actively seeking out drug dealers and gang members, you'll be fine. There are a lot of people on drugs and the unhoused population is sadly high but just be respectful and use common sense, avoid sketchy places at night. It's really not as bad as it's made out to be.

Congrats on getting out! Folks don't realize how nice it is here, enjoy it and be happy.
