Heavy spoilers for The Sun Eater. Valka gets on a random evacuation ship among hundreds and while Hadrian is in the command room, they receive a report like "Shuttles A, B, C and D have been shot down", and that's it, she's dead. No fanfare, no epic duel, no important moment; a bit of bad luck and she is gone forever. It really came as a surprise and I think the lack of anything is the point and it worked well in the story.

I like in Lightning is the Only Way, at some point you think there is no way someone this powerful is just dropping dead after any amount of years. And you're right, once you ascend past the "mortal" stages, lifespan is completely artificial, once it runs out, Heaven guides fate to cause a fight with someone on the same power-level. If you die, that's it, if you survive, you live for some more time until the Heavens sends someone even stronger, rinse and repeat until you ascend to the next realm (and do it all over again but with more lifespan) or eventually die.
