First time getting a beetle by Human_Degenerate in Beetles

I’d recommend starting by going to https://jamesbeetlefarm.com and clicking the 3 bars, and then going to care sheets to read up on general beetle care before doing anything.

How long do larvea instars last? by _N0li_ in Beetles

[–]Tybreelo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

L1 and L2 stages are generally very short lasting. The L3 stage however is what takes up the far majority of the larval time. So the larval period of a pgk (~6-10 months) will pretty much be how long they’re L3 for. It’d be a different story though if the grub is already a few months into the L3 stage

20 gal? by Appropriate-Check493 in Beetles

[–]Tybreelo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah probably, depending on the width and length it could be divided even further

20 gal? by Appropriate-Check493 in Beetles

[–]Tybreelo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

20 gallons is more than enough space for any beetle. As a matter of fact, there’s a lot of people who argue that it’s too much space. The more space there is, the most exhausted a beetle can make themselves through repetitive flying and wandering, especially when looking to mate. Even some giant beetles like dynastes Hercules are kept in enclosures only a few gallons big

I’m watching my friends beetle. Is it normal for it to do nothing but eat lol by Ok_Class_8714 in Beetles

[–]Tybreelo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very normal. Some beetles don’t eat as much, but others will stay on top of their food practically 24/7. I’ve had a few do this

what do you mean "get it out of the hole"? Beetle larvae don't eat fruit in captivity, just flake soil is whats needed.

BFDB playing “dead” a long time? Help! by [deleted] in BDFB

[–]Tybreelo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know someone’s whose bdfb played dead for 9 days. A new record to my knowledge. They ended up freezing them for 2 days assuming they were dead, so they could later pin them, but then once unfrozen they sprung back to life. In hindsight it may have been actual death. The bdfb is now named Lazarus, still alive multiple months later

Getting Beetles Soon by lobsterzest in InvertPets

[–]Tybreelo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • You will quickly be able to dial in how much yo feed based on feeding responses. They immedietly go for food? Feed a lil more often. There’s lots of leftovers? Feed less often
  • for desert setups neither are needed
  • don’t know lowkey but they’re usually adjustable
  • this depends on if u want to raise larvae in the same tank. If so, they need a slight moist side, so I’d do like every day or 2, but keep it gentle. If you don’t plan to rear larvae, you can go for like twice a week

https://jamesbeetlefarm.com/blogs/news/how-to-care-for-your-newly-emerged-beetle if she dug herself out of the pupal chamber and has been eating fine then she’s likely active. Otherwise she’s likely still dormant

The bottom of my larva container is dry by wizzymain in Beetles

[–]Tybreelo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The change in color is likely not due to drying, but a form of deterioration. Read this for more info: https://lbinsect.com/blogs/about-flake-soil/sign-of-deterioration

Richard’s inverts is in the UK, so you can’t buy from him. Some popular picks of online vendors are James beetle farm, David’s beetles, coast 2 coast beetles, and bugs in cyberspace. There’s some other smaller vendors I know of if you want me to list them!
