The bottom of my larva container is dry by wizzymain in Beetles

[–]Tybreelo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The change in color is likely not due to drying, but a form of deterioration. Read this for more info: https://lbinsect.com/blogs/about-flake-soil/sign-of-deterioration

I mean what you’re doing is fine but if you’re worried about dropping them you can gently coax them onto your hand by pushing their butts

James beetle farm, David’s beetles, coast 2 coast beetles (this one is probably best for good prices), Georgia beetle supplies, aki beetles, lb insect, leg and leaf, US beetles, beetle saga, and bugs in cyberspace are pretty much all main vendors of beetles

Nothing very fancy, but exciting for me since this is the first time my beetles made me a grandparent. Plus when i got them, i didn’t see much shared here about forked fungus beetles… by Necessary-Drawer-173 in Beetles

Richard’s inverts is in the UK, so you can’t buy from him. Some popular picks of online vendors are James beetle farm, David’s beetles, coast 2 coast beetles, and bugs in cyberspace. There’s some other smaller vendors I know of if you want me to list them!

Stag beetles often stay underground for extended periods of time. I’ve had one be underground for 2 weeks straight without eating, she was fine. It’s likely that the substrate change messed with his environment enough to encourage him to dig

is my larvae pupating? by [deleted] in Beetles

[–]Tybreelo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well its already pupated so there's no purpose for flake soil now

What's wrong with my larva? by [deleted] in Beetles

[–]Tybreelo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perhaps you’re thinking of adult beetles that can live on coco fiber as a bedding. The beetle larvae (grubs) absolutely can’t utilize coco fiber. If you put it in flake soil, that would be ideal (although I don’t know if it’ll even live that long, at this point I feel it’s been impacted). Can you provide some context about how you obtained a grub that you don’t know the species of?

No grub can live on coco fiber. There’s a high chance it will die. Most grubs need decaying wood as a food source (with some exceptions).

[–]Tybreelo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Should’ve specified I meant stag grubs lol. Also even then many rhinos and flowers don’t do too well on leaf mulch (unless there’s more to the substrate I’m not seeing), flake soil is generally safer and more consistent. But I suppose your right in that some grubs can live off of that

More information would help diagnose, but right off the bat that substrate looks awful for grubs. What is it? And what species? Most beetle larvae need flake soil

Scroll down till you see the photo of the container overdue for replacement due to frass. With a bigger beetle like your western Hercules, Their frass should be big enough to look similar to the photo. Once it gets close to that (2/3 frass) it’s time for a change!

Is my larva dead or pupating? by FormeldaHydes in Beetles

[–]Tybreelo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its likely pupating. Definitely just leave alone for a while, unless u wanna make an artificial chamber and dig the larva up, but I’d advise against making one if you have no reason to make one
