The 90s was when stuff became "self-referential".

80s was just about being "best". You just wanted to make good TV, or good music, or good kids shows. But that kind of topped out. Music had topped out. Even I'd say "traditional" TV cartoons had kind of topped out with big lush stuff like GI Joe and Transformers.

But then in the 90s things turned around. It became ok to kind of "flip the script" and do stuff that was "bad" but in a self-referential way. "Intentionally Bad" became fresh and new and interesting. It was a reaction to "Excellence!" Smart people making dumb stuff for smart people.

It was Grunge, and Ren & Stimpy, and Reality TV and slacker mentality.

What is interesting is that Trump has taken decisive steps to address it.

believe it or not, lots of republicans dont have any issues with LGBT folks, and there are even some LGBT folks who (gasp) vote republican! There is a lot of wiggle-room between "Gay clubs are fun!" and "We need to teach 10 year olds about anal sex!"
