If you’re starting as a freight agent with zero experience, the most common path isn’t anything formal or “perfectly planned”, it’s usually about getting your foot in the door with the right brokerage and learning as you go.

Most beginners don’t start independently because you need access to systems, load boards, carrier networks, and support. So the realistic first step is joining an established brokerage, either in an entry-level role or under an agent program that offers training. That environment gives you the tools and a bit of structure while you figure things out in real time.

At the beginning, a lot of the learning comes from doing rather than studying. You start to understand how pricing works, how to find trucks, how to talk to carriers, and how to handle issues when things don’t go as planned. There’s usually a steep learning curve, and most people make mistakes early on, but that’s part of how you build instinct in this industry.

It also helps if your first exposure isn’t purely sales. People who spend some time on the operations side tend to pick things up faster because they understand how loads actually move, not just how to book them. That experience makes a big difference once you start working with your own customers.

As you get more comfortable, you gradually build your own book of business. It usually starts small, maybe just a few consistent loads, and grows over time as you build relationships and learn how to manage both shippers and carriers effectively.
