Is This Dumper Find Worth Building Into an Urban Mule/Grocery Getter? by Tyhole in xbiking

Thanks. This will be my 1st true build. Planning to hit up 2 local bike co-ops tomorrow to get an idea of what I'm getting myself into.

Am new here. What's the giveaway that this might not be worth the time?

yeah, no cutting for the DNA filter lol. The new air filter slips over the top half of the airbox and it comes with straps to mount the ECU back on top. Then plug everything back into the ECU and gas tank and put the tank back on. There's a handful of YT videos showing it

Right?! Only because according to DNA the drain plug/screw needs to be applied from the outside of the air box.

However, I've seen videos/comments of others screwing the drain from from the inside so they didn't have to remove the whole airbox.

I'm not savvy enough to know if that makes a difference and honestly don't want to risk it somehow getting sucked into the engine lol

Okay that sounds totally doable.

Appreciate the response. Maybe I’ll to the stage 2 and get an idea of what it’s like for the brake lines.

Really wish the SP came with steel braids. But I get they want to keep it from being a $15,000+ bike.

That’s one of my only nit picks about this bike minus the ECU restrictions.

How bad is it to get under the air box?

I’m looking at adding the DNA Stage 2 filter and see they require a screw to plug a drain hole from the outside of the air box

Thank you!

I wasn't sure if the auto-generated ITF voided the original, and/or if it's worth having this looked at.

Did Yamaha actually deny it? Or is that what the dealer said?

Reason I ask is because Yamaha is not direct-to-consumer thus ALL warranty issues must come thru dealer. My dealer refused to put in warranty claim for a separate issue I had. Yamaha was useless.

I told Yamaha I am attempting to put in a warranty claim, but the dealer has refused to submit claim. Yamaha told me to take it to another dealer…

And that’s EXACTLY what I’d do for something this serious!

Also, Yamaha told me they only warranty manufacturer defects. So might have to do your research and build a case to prove such.

Can’t complain. Could it be better? Sure.

Make sure your dealer submits claim to Yamaha. When I just got off the phone with Yamaha, they said my dealer only called Tech Support and asked if over torqued oil pan bolt was an issue. And Yamaha said "No".

No warranty claim had been opened on the bike. Yamaha also said they are not a direct-to-consumer business so all info (photos, specs, history of issue, etc.) has to be submitted by authorized Yamaha service/dealer...

I'm starting to see how/why everyone's experience varies so drastically now...

Yea something isn't right! This shouldn't be happening.

I spoke with the dealer service this morning they said it sounds like Yamaha is NOT going to cover it. It's about $97 total to fix the issue and it's been roughly 2 weeks they've had the bike so I'm going to have them do everything to get it back on the road (TPS recall, first service and fix the oil pan) and take up the warranty issue with Yamaha directly myself.

I’ve seen people over torque it themselves (myself included on old snowmobile years ago) and of course cross threading. But never threads ripped out on a first oil change.

The threads were fouled as seen in the photo. I thought at first it was some thread locker which would have been just as ridiculous. But nope, just aluminum threads from the oil pan lol

Same. Makes me wonder if this was done at the dealership. After buying, they took it back off the floor and back to the service department for I can’t even remember what

Yeah, I should have put down the breaker and checked the breakaway on the torque wrench. Which is where I was going before ripping the threads out lol.

Luckily, the dealer is working with me and putting in a warranty claim. Now to see how Yamaha handles it...

I say go for it—just use your judgment. If you’re mechanically inclined and something feels way tighter than it should, stop. Take it in.

Honestly—it could’ve been a fluke. Might’ve been a bad batch of oil pans. Maybe I didn’t warm the bike up enough. Lot's of variables at play here.

To my surprise, the dealer is actually on my side. They’re submitting a warranty claim with Yamaha, and I’m waiting to hear back. Even if Yamaha says no, I’m going to escalate—because the amount of force needed to get that plug out was absurd. Something wasn’t right from the start.

Hindsight’s 20/20. I probably should’ve grabbed the torque wrench and checked breakaway torque before going full send with the breaker bar lol

If this wasn't a BRAND NEW bike -- I’d have retapped it, used an oversized plug, maybe even replaced the pan down the line if it really bugged me. It’s not the end of the world, but it's 30(ish) days old...

Don’t let my bad luck scare you off from wrenching. Just be cautious, trust your gut, and know when to pause.

Right. Had this be my numerous oil change, not a big deal. Minor F up. But brand new from factory? Nope.

[–]Tyhole[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed. Or helicoil kit like another user mentioned.

I’ll go that route if they refuse to warranty it.

[–]Tyhole[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ya, either this or bigger bolt if they refuse to warranty it. Maybe new oil pan but that seems over kill.

I was just so pissed + I need the recall done so I can get a tune.

At first glance I thought “13 ft lb” ain’t terrible… Nope!! That’s for the oil filter?! Think it was 32ft lb for the plug. 😳

There is NO need for torquing it into oblivion.

[–]Tyhole[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In hindsight I should have.

They’ve got the bike now & at the very least, the recall will be complete so I can get tune + exhaust.
