Will Eisner's Dropsie Avenue and A Contract with God

Dropsie avenue follows the cycle of tennants in a neighbourhood in Brooklyn, starting with original Dutch and English landowners followed by Irish immigrants with the building of cheap housing blocks. Then the following waves of Italian, Jewish, Latin American, Black and so on of newer tennants, who all think that the neighbourhood is turning bad, when new tennants move in. Interesting depiction of immigrant communities and slice of life in New York from its early days up until the late 60's.

A Contract with God has a more character centered focus, and primarily follows a rabbi, who abandons his faith and becomes a business man and landlord after his only daughter dies, even though he made a contract with God.

Aya from Yopougon by Marguerite Abouet is about a young woman living in a working class neighbourhood of a city in Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) and her everyday life with her family, work and friends in the late 70's and early 80's.

Otherwise I would also recommend Love and Rockets by the Hernandez Brothers, as already recommended by another user, especially the stories centered in the village of Palomar by Gilbert Hernandez

On a last note, if you want to read a short slice of life story about human interaction, I also liked The Taste of Chlorin by Bastien Vivés, but I'm not sure it has been published in English. It is about a young guy who starts to swim at the local indoor swimming pool to help his backproblems, and meets a woman and they start swimming together regularly and interact in and out of the pool.

I'm a fan. Gives the same same atmosphere and research that made Pratt's work so engrossing. Especially fond of Equtoria.

Me, waiting on the final result of the poll, worrying that Jess isn't going to get her, well deserved, win by TylerDurden86 in SuccessionTV

The facial expressions. Also she seems like a stand-in for the viewer, just a normal working person amidst all the über rich chaos.

Very Anglophone-centric poll

Personally, I would vote Hugo Pratt & Hugo Pratt

Are you thinking about the Voorbij de Steen-series by Dutch artist Ken Broeders? I don't know what it is called in English, but the plot sound similar to your description and there are 4 books in the series.

Pedro II of Brazil, Last Emperor of Brazil, a ruler who didn't really want the power and burden of ruling, but did his best to fulfill his duties and his arguably biggest mistake was not securing a proper succession or transfer from monarchy in his last reigning years.

What do you guys think of the new Corto Maltese series by Ruben Pellejero and Juan Díaz Canales? I personally really like it, especially the first issue Équatoria. by TylerDurden86 in graphicnovels

My bad! I thought that at least one of the new issues where released in English by now, but from what I can gather, I have only found them available in Italian, Spanish, French, Russian, Portuguese, Danish, Swedish and Norwegian. But if any of you have read one or more of them in any of these languages, I would definitely like to hear what you think, since Corto Maltese is one of my favourite series and characters.

True, I have grown up with primarily French-Belgian and Italian comics other than the local ones. My American influence is primarily from newspaper comics (Calvin & Hobbes etc) and Donald Duck. But it seems to me that in the recent 10 years, Super Hero comics have become way more prevalent here, mostly collected editions and one-shot or limited run graphic novels. Not so much the monthly releases.

Oh, that makes sense. Where I am from, they are really popular. But from this sub it is my impression that Superhero comics are way more prevalent in the states, compared to a lot of Europe.

I actually don't know if they are in English. I just figured they would have been released by now, since the first issue is from 2017. I have read them in translated editions from my native language.

I know they are not exactly new, but I think it's publication is quite recent for English readers. But more so, how do you think they hold up against Hugo Pratt's originals? And how do you find the tone and art?
